Why am I having an MRI

Last Friday I had a stereostatic needle biopsy for microcalcifications. The radiologist called this evening and told me that it came back "malignant" but not to panic because "it's not the kind of cancer you die from." He repeated that and "it's not a killing kind" a number of times. The part that's confusing me is that I'm now supposed to get an MRI to make sure it's just the small area that showed up on the mammogram. He said that he thought I would get away with just having the one small area removed. I don't know if he's just trying to reassure me, but I'm so confused and scared. None of the other sites I've read talk about getting an MRI after biopsy and before surgery. Is that standard? Thank you. I'm new to this and I'm terrified.

I have lobular carcinoma in situ. LCIS. I had a breasts biopsy 3 weeks ago to remove a group of precancerous microcalcifications. . Today I had a MRI. on both breasts. My oncologist just wants to make sure it is not anywhere else. This gives me comfort if it come out clean. And if they find another group of LCIS then he can remove it with another biopsy. Easy.  Try to find the comfort in all these tests and know soon you will have all your answers. All of this can make us all crazy with worry. MRI's I think can show the doctor what they are dealing with. Each doctor has their own way of doing things. If mine had wanted a MRI before biopsy I would of welcomed it. I want to know what is there and what I am dealing with... before biopsy or after. :) One day at a time...slay one dragon at a time. Hang in there. :)

I should have added that he said I have Ductal Carcinoma In Situ. If it's "in situ" then why would I need an MRI?
