Worried

Two days ago I received a call from my surgeon telling me that my core biopsy showed DCIS and Invasive Lobular Carcinoma or Lobular Carcinoma In Situ (can't remember which of those two she said, lobular is all I remember). She is wanting to do another type of biopsy to check the lymph nodes to see if the cancer has spread and what stage the cancer is.

My question is, since there were no tumors indicated on the mammogram only a single mass of calcification's are the chances for breast saving surgery good? Also, it's been 6 years since I had my last mammo. (I know shame on me, but I just turned 40) and that test was clear, so how worried should I be about DCIS becoming invasive. I'm scared that I have had this so long that it has spread.

After I heard the surgeon say the "C" word I sort of went into my own world and didn't retain half of what she told me. I do remember her saying that one of them was a pre-cancer type so I am thinking the Lobular one is the LCIS. I am supposed to go for a consultation with her next week, but since I have chosen to go out of state for the rest of my dx and tx I don't think I will keep that appointment. Oh what to do.

Please speak with a genetic counselor at your local hospital about testing for BRCA mutation. It's a simple blood test and with your family history I am sure your insurance will cover it.
I am glad you got tested by mammogram so early! You are finding it early and the odds are in your favor that you will do fine!
Please, keep your chin up. I know this is a very rough time, fear and anxiety can be crippling. Ask your doctor for a script of valium if you feel you need the help to calm down enough to absorb all that's coming at you.
And remember, we are here and will help you navigate the unknown.

Best wishes.

Good idea about the VAR. The only test I have ever had is the two mammograms and the core biopsy. My mother is a three time BC survivor, that is why I got my first mam. at such a young age. I did as I was told get one at 35 (but I went at 34) and then again at 40..well, look what that got me :(

I am so sorry you got a cancer diagnosis. Treatments have evolved over the last several years and you will do fine. You may want to get a tape recorder and tape your Doctor appointments so you don't miss anything. Mine was voice activated and I kept it at the top of my purse so it picked up all the conversation.

Invasive lobular carcinoma doesn't show up on mammograms as a rule. It will show itself on occasion on an ultra sound but will stand up and shout on an MRI. If you don't want to go back to that doctor, make sure to fax over a request for your test results and make sure you've signed it. Or better yet, go there and request a copy.

You are very young. And getting early mammograms. Have you tested for BRCA genetic mutations?

Best wishes
