throat pain question

I have had for a few months sharp, severe pain in upper throat on swallowing salad dressing or mayonnaise that has vinegar or fruit juice in it. No other symptoms. I find only supraglotteal cancer listed when I look on the Net for what this can be a symptom of. My ENT doctor had me get a barium swallow (stomach through larynx or most of larynx) which looked normal, and will be doing a more thorough exam (down-through-the-nose tube light, in-office); my mouth looked normal enough. She says may be from GERD, but I only get acid reflux once or twice a year, though when I do it is up into the mouth, no heartburn. Is there any significant chance that this may be GERD or simple ulcer in my throat or should I try to prepare for a finding of supraglottal cancer?

You are right. The doctor did the laryngoscopy and my throat looks normal. I still have the symptom but she says maybe the acid-blocking pills will help. She is being very thorough and will do another examination in a month. Thank you so very much for your support and expert advice.

Hi,
The symptoms of laryngeal cancer depend on the location of the tumor.Tumors in the supraglottal region above the vocal cords often cause more, but less distinct symptoms. These include:persistent sore throat, pain when swallowing, difficulty swallowing or frequent choking on food, bad breath, lumps in the neck, persistent ear pain (called referred pain; the source of the pain is not the ear) and change in voice quality.

Keeping in mind your history of acid reflux in all probability this has to do with GERD.
Your symptoms also occur only with certain food substances which also favors a diagnosis of GERD.
So I think you should hope for the best result possible i.e no cancer of larynx.
