Cat not drinking water

Hi there

I'm having trouble getting my cat to drink water. I've tried changing his bowl several times and even bought a drinking fountain for him but he simply will not touch his water. As a result I've had to mix in water with his wet food, usually 1/3  cup or so with each meal and refrain from feeding him dry food as it'll dehydrate him. He has no problem with that and cleans his bowl every time, though I still keep out the different bowls of water and fountain for him just in case.

I'm just wondering if this is sufficient enough to keep my little buddy hydrated and if there's anything else I can do?

How can you be sure he isn't drinking the water? Perhaps he is, you just don't notice because it's just a little tiny bit, but exactly what he needs to stay hydrated. Wanna do a test to see if he is hydrated? Lift the scruff of the neck, just lift it as if you were going to pick him up, and release without actually lifting the cat, just the scruff of the neck. If the skin takes long to come back down, the cat needs more water. If the skin however, comes back down fast, then your lil buddy is hydrated and you can sit back and relax.

My cats are also on wet food....and do not drink a lot of water. I still keep it clean just in case, because they do play and run, and it is pretty hot and humid where I live. So, I would still lave his water fountain out.

All the best to ya!

I play a game called Drinky water. I put fresh water in a wide mouth cup.
I'll put it up to her. If she's thirsty, she'll drink.  If she's not thirsty, she turns her head.     Pamela.

Thanks for the help guys. Dande I'm not 100% sure but I've always been able to notice the water level drop in the water bowls with the previous cats I've owned on the same wet food diet and I'd see them drinking every now and then but never this little fella.

I pulled the scruff on the back of his neck and it went back fairly quickly so I guess that's a good sign!

Thanks for the reassurance guys :)

Hi an welcome, many cats that are fed a canned diet will drink very little if any water, wet food is 76% water already thus similar to their natural diet of mice. The body fluids of mice are pretty much all the fluids a cat in the wild requires. Keep yr fountain out incase and canned food only an he should do just fine
