Akira scored pretty high, but she was still in the "average" category.  I would say "high average".  She is plenty smart, but she doesn't get to be called an Einstein.  Maybe I should be glad of that, because if they're too smart they can be destructive.  Whereas, when they're just smart enough, in the "average" category, they're a lot of fun to be around.

Since I've been pretty sick recently, Akira has done a couple of things that are pretty clever that most people wouldn't expect cats to do.  Today, I used the dog signs she was taught before I got her, because she was driving me nuts because she wanted her breakfast and didn't want me to lie in bed any longer.  To keep my sanity, I use the dog signs she was taught by her previous owner who used dog signs with her seeing eye dog to get Akira to be quieter and calmer for me so I wouldn't lose it.  Guess what, it works with her.  I get her to simmer down and I don't end up losing my temper with her when she's like this.  Just remember that Dr. Amen (PBS) explained that cats don't have the ability to have patience or to remember to "sit" or "stay" for very long, so I have to tell Akira several times using the dog signs she was taught.  Okay, for Akira this isn't actually so unusual.  She really is that smart.  And, just getting her to sit and to stay while I get her food for her when she's like this and I'm sick is just enough to keep me from losing it.  Once she gets her food, she's fine, so it's really not a big deal if I can just get her to be calmer for the few minutes that I'm getting her food for her that's all it takes.  Seriously, this works with Akira.

What she did yesterday was priceless, though.  It was dinner time, so I had more patience than I do in the morning when I'm dealing with these chronic health issues.  She got fed up with waiting for dinner and was really making a scene.  I had a lot going on, so I couldn't keep up with her last night.  Anyway, I went to get her her dinner and noticed that it was time to open a new can of food.  I use the economy cans (Wellness grain free).  I pulled out a new can out of the drawer I keep a few at a time down where I can reach better and showed it to her.  I was being half-sarcastic, mostly to see what she would do, when I asked her:  "Is this what you're looking for?"  I had to laugh at what she did to answer the question for me...

She stood up on her hind legs and reached up like she was grabbing the can with one paw on each side of the can.  I have never seen her do that before.  But, I do think she answered my question, don't you?
