Fires in Bastrop, Tx.

Devestating fires are encompassing the town of Bastrop in Central Texas.  I just read where the Animal Shelter there has been evacuated.  Several hundred homes in the area have burned.  I know Nancyjac on the cat forum works with the Animal shelter(s) in that area and I believe she also lives in the area.  My prayers go out to her and all the people and animals caught up in this horrendous devestation.

Nancy, that sounds like so much fun....maybe we'll check that out one of these days. The '56 BelAire sounds really cool....he could always put it on a trailer and pull it to Miss.  That's what most of them do. I'll mark Oct in Fredericksburg on our calendar.

A couple of the members from his car club have done that cruising the coast thing and they loved it.  We haven't in part because he doesn't like to drive that far in his 56 BelAire.  We do an annual thing in October in Fredericksburg where different car clubs around Texas cruise in and hang out for the weekend and then there is an annual show called Lonestar in May that is the biggest car show in Texas.  Different car clubs rotate hosting it and next year is our turn (Central Texas Classic Chevy Club).

Well, cool that he got his car!  My husband has toyed with the idea...not long ago he saw a '39 4-door Mercury that he just happened to pass by on the way to Dallas,  He fell in love with it...it was the first 4-door off the assembly line.  Anyway he's still talking about it so he may end up getting it.  In Miss, when we lived there last yr, they had a week called "Cruisin' the Coast" and there must have  been 4-5 thousand classic cars there.  It's held in Oct...your hubby would probably love it.

I think we were not to far from where you live yesterday.  You are east of Temple right?  We went up I35 as far as Temple and then west on 36 to Gatesville.  Didn't see an evidence of fires anywhere along the way and no lingering smoke haze once we got to the northern part of Williamson County.

Interesting though, the ramifications of wildfires you don't generally think about.  We went to Gatesville to look at an old car (87 El Camino).  Old cars are my husband's hobby.  We ended up getting the car but now we can't insure it so he can't drive it.  He insures them with a company that specializes in insuring classic cars and they said they aren't insuring anything in Central Texas right now because of the wildfires.  I guess they are afraid people will buy new policies or add vehicles to existing policies that were either already damaged by fire or may be in imminent danger still.  They did tell us they think that restriction will be lifted in a week or so.  But that sure wasn't a consideration we thought of when he decided to buy the car.

Nancy, so glad you and yours are ok!  We are out of state while all of this is happening and I've just heard things from friends and family...and CNN.  Hope you all are able to stay out of harm's way!  Thanks for all the work you are doing with those homeless pets.

Thank you both and Linda too for the notes and concern.  As you can imagine, it's been pretty hectic the last few days and I'm pretty tired, but other than that, fine.  The Williamson County Regional Shelter is in Georgetown, pretty close to Leander, but was unharmed by fires and was able to take a lot of the animals from the Leander shelter.  The Austin Humane Society, Town Lake Animal Shelter in Austin, and a rescue group called Austin Pets Alive, were able to take many of the ones from the Bastrop shelter and Shadow Cats Rescue that I am now working with did a lot of the coordination for fostering and medical care. The hard part now is sorting out homeless pets from those separated from owners.  Most of the shelters are offering free adoptions of the animals they already had so they can hold the new intakes for a while to allow owners a chance to reclaim them before they are adopted out,

so glad to read you are safe Nancy....and the shelter you volunteer at so far I take it is as well...
I am so saddened to read about the people, homes, wildlife and pets lost....that is just horrible.
I can't imagine the tremendous amount of work involved to evacuate a shelter and now to take in the injured and even more homeless ones. My heart breaks for all these poor little souls, thank heavens for kind, caring people such as yourself.
Please keep us updated and please keep safe....♥

Hi All,

It's been a pretty bad week all around Central Texas.  The first wildfire was actually in my own town of Pflugerville this past Sunday.  Fortunately, being both the first and the smallest of the wildfires, it was contained fairly quickly without much injury or property damage, but now that the winds have finally died down, there was just a general haze of smoke still all around Pflugerville.  The fire on Sunday was about 4 miles from where I live.

The worst has been in Bastrop, which is about 40 miles east of me.  The acreage burned and property damage and injury was just horrible.  In addition to several people that died, hundreds of animals, both livestock and pets were lost.  The shelter there had to be evacuated.  There were also fires in Leander and Steiner Ranch both of which are about 15-20 miles north and west of me.  The animal shelter in Leander also had to be evacuated.

Needless to say, it was has been a nightmare and frantic activity for every animal shelter and rescue group in Central Texas, trying to take in animals from the two shelters as well as animals that were injured or displaced from affected homes.  All of the area shelters, rescue groups, vets and clinics, and the public in general have just been amazing in their willingness to help.  We are now at the point where we are trying to sort out who is who and get what animals we can back to their owners.

Haven't seen any newspapers, Jade and the cable was out most of the day here at the hotel.  We have my son-in-law's father looking after our place and all is ok there so far. I can only imagine the smoke.  We are probably 40-50 mi from Bastrop.  I'll be home Wed. and it can't come too soon for me!

Linda, front page of my paper showing aerial shot of the terrible devastation.  Looks like the pine trees your speaking of. 1000 homes lost.  700 or 1000, it's all horrific.  I hope your family is alright!  Glad to hear your area should be spared.  But like here, no one is spared the smoke and ash.

We have family in that area also.  All the schools in the area are closed, except my cousin's little boy's school which has been set up as a sheliter. i had heard that as many as 700 homes were destroyed.  There are a lot of pine trees in that region and since they are so dry, they go up in flames quickly and the fire spreads like crazy.

I hope Nancy posts soon so we know she is ok but i bet she is so busy with the rescue operation underway.  Opus, we are out of town, I'll be home next Wed.  My daughter said there were a couple fires in the Cameron area but none so far out our way.  My husband says there's nothing at out place to burn, the grass is all dead.  Yes, lets all send our prayers that Nancy is ok and all the cats and dogs will be saved.  But I shidder to think about all the deer and other wildlife.
