Good thoughts for Hildie, please.

For once, I'm asking your prayers for one of my kitties.

With the good news of her remission from diabetes, her followup yesterday brought some bad news.

Hildie has been admitted to a veterinary hospital about 70 miles away.  Our vet sent us there due to the level of care and available diagnostic equipment.

Miss Hildie's blood work results showed everything normal, except a very high bilirubin level.  My vet was thinking blocked bile ducts or stones, recommended the other clinic, that was at 10 this morning.  By Noon, I had Hildie there.  They did the initial taking of vitals real quick and she was being seen by the specialist by 12:45.  They had her in the treatment room for almost 3 hours.

Dr Simmerson went over the results with me.  She strongly suspects small cell lymphoma, which is treatable.  She also said it was the underlying cause of the "fatty liver" Hildie has due to the weight loss she's had over the last couple of months.  This is treatable, too.

I think we caught things fairly early, did not notice the weight loss until after we returned from Vermont a few weeks ago.  The folks at the kennel where she stayed said she was eating okay then.

Hildie will be kept for 3 - 4 days in hospital while they do high protein feeding and render cancer treatment, too.

Got our fingers crossed, she will be 13 in September. Dr Simmerson said she will not guarantee results, but is very hopeful that this will work. She's had success in giving kitties several years.

Yes of course all conditions are treatable and it sounds like she is in the best of hands.
Will they be doing chemotherapy?

I am so sorry Pip and Anita of course dear Hildie has my prayers, and some ((hugs)) for mom and dad too, keep us posted

Along with the "agressive" feeding to combat the hepatic lipidosis, Dr Simmerson will be doing a course of chemo.  She said there are medicines we can administer at home to continue the fight.

I am completely shocked by this news!  Hildie will definitely get my prayers.

This vet strongly suspects lymphoma, then it's not a definite, right?  How do they get a solid diagnosis?  I'd want some confirmation.

My thoughts and prayers are with you....

She is going by the ultrasound image and comparisons to their library of reference images.  She said that the imagery was inconsistent with IBD or other similar inflammatory conditions.  She spent a solid half hour going over her findings with me, including the needle biopsy of Hildie's liver.

They could do an endoscopy and take biopsies, but she also said that Hildie, in her current condition, is not a good candidate for surgery.

I think part of the reason Hildie was back there so long was this research time.

The treatment we agreed upon was a middle course aimed at the most likely illness.  From her description, this is a very different type of lymphoma from the fast growing tumor that affected dear, sweet Kessie.

She, her intern and the vet techs were all quite taken by Miss Hildie's manner of accepting being poked and prodded today.  Like her sister, Hildie is a smart cat and knows, I believe, when people are trying to help her.

Dr Simmerson liked my comment that I understand that medicine is an art informed by science.  Sometimes you just have to trust the artist.

Update on Hildiekatt, made it through the night okay. Hit a wall, more dehydrated than first estimate, also went hyperglycemic, so back on insulin.

I'll trade her having diabetes again if they can help the other trouble.

No evening update, but we will take no news as good news.  The clinic is open 24/365, so we know she's being cared for around the clock.

Just got back from a visit with Hildie, she took a turn for the worse overnight and we thought we'd be making the Final Decision.

We spent about an hour with Hildie, spoke with the vet on and off (she did another ultrasound to see what if any signs there were).  Hildie's belly was full (as expected) digested food is making its way through her intestines, no signs of intestinal die-off...

We will visit again tomorrow afternoon after another day of treatment and re-evaluate what is best for our little friend.

BTW, once we started petting her, the lethargy seemed to lift.  Her head came up as best she could with the feeding tube and she was purring to beat the band, which is why we decided on another day.

The attending vet called and spoke with Anita about 2 hours ago.

She is doing neither worse not better than earlier today.  Biggest concern is whether or not her gut is gaining the nutrition her body needs to recover.

They gave her an injectable steroid instead of the oral they'd been giving through the feeding tube.  We'll have to ask the questions, is her digestive system working and are we causing her harm to continuing trying a few more days.

Unfortunately, it looks like we are going to have to let Hildie go over the Rainbow.  The treatments are not working (got woke up by a call from Dr Ingraham, the overnight vet).  They will do palliative care until we can get there this afternoon. Can't get there earlier, have to get new tires as my two front one have cracked sidewalls.

AWWWWW, Pip!

So very sorry to hear this news. I am new here , but was looking thru your photo album and it sure seems Ms Hildie, as well as the rest of your "Cat PacK"  enjoy a really wonderful life. When it is their time to go you can rest assured they know they lived with Love and Caring.

My prayers go out to you and your family. Enjoy your time over the rainbow bridge, Hildie, until the rest of your families time comes.

Sincerely,
CML

Thank you all.

Hildiekatt no longer battles in this life. She said her goodbyes to us yesterday when she roused. Today, we could see the light had gone out of her eyes, though her little body was still breathing.

The nice folks at the clinic had given her a bath to make her pretty for our last visit, had her wrapped in a blanket with a warm water bottle.

We sat with her for a little, but she was not there anymore. Her breathing was more and more laboered, so we had the vet do the Final Act of Kindness.

She went swiftly and quietly, will be cremated and returned to us. She will rest in the urn, which contains her sister...Silver Kestrel the Ransacker and Hildiekatt Halfshadow the Harrier together again....running around with Tuna Cat, Queen Victoria Grey, Calamity Jane Grey, April Dancer, Cerridwen Blythe and Chesapeake Bandylegs the Hunter.

We'll see how Teia does as a solo cat, will likely adopt another older kitty who is used to other cats after awhile.

Now I'm really crying.  It never seems 'final' until the actual words are written.  Again, Pip, I am so very sorry for your loss. (((Hugs)))
