Recent Hyperthyroidism/CRD/Severe Anemia with high WBC

Hello. Our lovely (?) 12 year old male Tabby  (Buddy) has recently been dx with hyperthyroidism, CRD, has severe anemia  and an elevated WBC count. We completed 3 weeks of twice daily Tapazole and his drive dropped too much. We've lowered his dose and he's back eating and drinking albeit not enough. We've been told he's 'on borrowed time' and he is still enjoying life despite losing a lot of weight. Our vet believes he may have cancer, but I feel it's just a way to say there's nothing we can do. Like many people, we are head over heals in love with our kitty. He didn't take to the low protein diet and we're trying to feed him whatever he'll take at this point. The antibiotics didn't touch this unknown ?source of infection. We believe in quality of life. I wanted to know if anyone knows of anything additional we can feed him or supplement him to help beef him up/ encourage Hgb production. I have given him SQ fluid, but not lately because he is drinking and we aren't wanting to stress him since he's still up and around a bit. He's showing interest in life and is still continent although probably a bit constipated due to dehydration. Has anyone been through this and found any new tips? At present getting his pills in isn't a problem, we're trying a phosphorus lowering supplement and his is showing a little bit of an appetite as we're leaving him a little hyperthyroid at present.

Hello.  I am so very sorry for your loss.  I understand how you feel - we all do.  I lost my Jade end of Oct to the Exact Same issues.  We did and tried almost everything you did including the meds for hypert, but she wouldn't eat, so we stopped them.

We, too, believe in Quality of Life.  We ended up using a wonderful home service to send our girl to the Rainbow Bridge Oct 31st.  Since you posted here, your Buddy has now joined the group of MedHelp kitties who have passed.  They were all lined up welcoming Buddy to his new, painfree, happy life.  I hope you will take comfort in knowing you did absolutely everything you could for your boy, and he is waiting to see you again one day.

RIP Buddy.  Hugs to you BuddysPeople...♥

hi....I'm so sorry to read this, you did all you could for your baby Buddy sometimes things are just beyond our control and we as good parents need to make very hard decisions with 'their best interests' at heart. Its heartbreaking when that time comes. RIP little Buddy♥

Thank you so much for your kind words and  aid with a new food hope. We had to put our baby down last night and I'm still acutely dispaired. I'd say more but I'm incapable at this time. I'm appreciative of your quick advice and support. It truly meant a lot.

Hi Peeps,

Budy is one lucky guy to have a family like yours who have given him a wonderful life of twelve years. Yes he has issues and may be on borrowed time, but as lo g as YOU believe his quality of life is still good, than Buddy wants to stay a bit longer. Good for him.....and you can reward him with Weruva cat food. It is very high in calories , but also yummi-ness. I think he would love this food and it is grain free and human quality.

My cat laps this up and it very picky. Unfortunately it has put weight on her and was too high in carbs for her, so we now have changed so she will not develop diabetes.

You just let Buddy have and do anything his little heart desires to make him happy. The time will unfortunately soon come when he will let you know he needs to leave you so he may be pain free. He will leave knowing he had special people who loved him deeply and will now set him free of his earthly pain.

Hard thing to do , but a must when we truly love our pets and want what's best for THEM. You will have plenty of support here when that time comes.

Keep us posted, I am sure many others will have some input on your post.

Best wishes to you and Buddy,
CML
