Miss Kissie ill...

Hey all;

An unusual post from me.  Silver Kestrel the Ransacker, affectionately known as Miss Kissie is sick.

Kissie will be 12 in April and has been producing loose stools for a couple of weeks, plus she's lost quite a bit of weight and occasionally up-chucks.

Vet has taken blood; we are awaiting results, but in the meantime are giving her an antibiotic (twice a day), an anti-diarrheal plus a pro-biotic (each once a day).

She continues to have a good appetite, uses the Box, coat is glossy, eyes are clear, nose is moist, energy level seems fine, still goes to town on her scratch pad, still very social...likes a sheltered spot for napping, but does not hide.

Stools are pancake batter to toothpaste consistency.  Color has been dark tan, but normal brown seems to be returning.

A suggestion we are acting on is to find wet foods that do not contain fish meal as a component, which we have been informed may trigger allergic reaction in elder kitties.  Kitty Tuna will remain a once a week treat.  We've also tried mixing in a little pumpkin or yogurt to her wet food.

I also got a kitty treat, which has pro-biotic properties...

...just got off the phone with the vet.

Blood work looks okay, he quizzed us on the dietary adjustments and likes what we are doing.

Hopefully, just some dietary changes...

LOL...Opus!!!  =)

We should celebrate our own BMs!!!  Why not?????

I really would like to get a kitty, but not in the near future.  I'm dealing w/ some money problems and am looking for a better paying job before I get a kitty again.  When the time is right, I will be rescuing a kitty from the humane society.  No other option for me!  You get the very best animals from there, and they never fail to show how thankful they are.  Those animals deserve the best!

Hugs

Missy K seems to have bounced back a bit, keeping her food down and the "deposits" are coming out closer to normal.

However, I did do a little experiment and let her have some fish based food for supper...back to looseness.

We'll keep it to poultry only now and see if that IS the key.

Sara, hopefully there is treatment, which will help Snickers.  We hate to let them go, but I know we hate seeing them hurt even more.

I am so sorry to hear she isnt doing well.  I know it is painful to think about the end of life for them but i believe the same way you do.  It isnt fair to keep them around for us.  We have to love them enough to let them go.  I am waiting on the same thing here with Snickers.  If that mass on his pancreas isnt good i will be making the same decision.  Just know i am sending you prayers and strength to get thru this trying time with your girl.  I so hope she will pull thru~~~sara

Hi Pip, I was hoping to hear some good news today!  I'm sorry that things aren't improving.  I'm also going to keep my fingers crossed for you that Kessie will eventually start improving.

If this winds up being the worst case scenario, I am positive the vet and all of your buddies and fans of Kessie on the forum will be able to come up w/ some helpful tips to make your Kessie more comfortable and happy.

I am so sorry that you and Anita are going through such a rough time.  My heart truly goes out to you.  Please know that if there's anything ANY of us here can do, just let us know.  Unfortunately, we've all gone through this at one time or another.

Hugs and prayers for all of you, Pip!

Oh Pip, I am so very sorry to read Kessie isn't responding as we had hoped...I do hope its not lymphoma, however its always a possibility when nothing appears to be improving. I am praying the its a matter of inflammation as you mention and the prednisone will produce some results and soon.

I agree with your end of life decisions for yourself as well as for Kessie, I too feel the same way, I would not put myself nor my babies through the ordeal...we as pet parents must speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, hard as it is!!

I continue to have her in my prayers, the little darling at least isn't appearing to have any pain, I do hope these latest treatments produce some healing results...

(((hugs))) to you, Anita and Kessie♥

Unfortunately, Miss Kessie seems to have had a set back.  Anita brought her to the vet yesterday, she's down to 8 1/2#.

He's puzzled, as we are.  In his opinion, doing the right things for a sensitive digestive tract.

From his exam and comparing notes with our observations (mass in her abdomen seems larger), it may be inflammation from all the irritation, or lymphoma.

He gave her injections of Vitamin B, an anti-diarrheal and an anti-inflammatory steroid.  He prescribed a course of Prednisone to see if that helps.

Anita said Kessie showed no signs of being in pain while he was palpitating her belly.

But, from the stress of the day I think, Kessie lost her supper in a big way last night.  Her appetite was okay this morning, ate most of the chicken live-rice (mix Anita made her, did a big batch and froze it in ice cube trays, defrost to serve slightly warm), which I served her half and half with some Science Diet Mature cat wet food.

We are past the concerned to worried stage for her.

We discussed last night the possibility of an end of life decision.  Putting her through cancer treatments, especially in her diminished condition, would be keeping her surviving for our sake not hers.

I will not put me through that (it's in my advance directive), and I will not do it to a cat who has been a good little friend.

We are facing the possibility that it is near to the time to say goodbye.  I'd rather be a little early on the decision, than see her suffer.

Thank you all for your caring and advice.

Fingers are crossed, hoping for the better outcome.
