My cat started having minor convulsions earlier today.

I cannot afford to visit a vet at this point in time. But my beloved cat came to me today, and started to have minor convulsions which were isolated to his ears, head and forelimbs. Shortly after the convulsions, he started pawing at his eyes quite a bit. I am not sure if they were just itchy, or the two behaviors are linked. Also, he was fairly cold for a  cat.

He is doing quite a bit better now, with no convulsions or eye problems, however, he is still kinda cold. He has been very cuddly, and sleeping lots between getting off my bed to drink lots of water and eat a few bites of food.

He has no prior health problems, is a neutered male, of mixed breed, and is approximately 11 years of age.

Should I be worried at all? I am assuming him eating, drinking, and not hiding from people means hes pretty much okay... but assuming is a pretty dangerous thing.

Hi Kristen, what a scary thing to see, huh.  Yes, I would be very worried if I were you.  I have come to know that just because a cat is eating, drinking and purring doesn't mean much in the way of health since they hide their distress until they are quite ill.  Kitty could of ingested something he shouldn't, could be diabetes with the increase in drinking, just impossible to guess on the Internet, you know?  I am also very worried about his temperature.

Could you ask your vet if you could make pymts?  Anything, but kitty really must be seen and treated.  Also, at the top of the forum are suggestions on financial help.  Take a look and see if any of them would work for you.

I will call the vet tomorrow and ask about payment options, I hope they offer a payment plan of some kind. I really am worried about him.

I hope so, too.  Did you check out the resources for financial help?  Here's the link to make it easy on you

http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/Pets/RESOURCES-TO-HELP-PAY-FOR-VET-CARE/show/535?cid=2

Specifically look at the Care Credit.  I believe it's a credit card the fees would be put on and that way the vet is paid and you are responsible for cc pymts.

Best of luck and please let us know how it goes and how kitty is doing.  (((Hugs)))

Unfortunately, those links seem to be for Americans only, and the vets in town do not do payments. My mother said that she will take the cat to the vet on pay day if he looks like he needs it. She seems skeptical of him being sick though.

He seems like he is doing better, hes eating more, drinking normally, bounding up the stairs like an energetic dog (he has very dog-like movement naturally.), and sleeping less than he was. I am still concerned about him, and worried, and will definitely push to have him taken to a vet by my mother, regardless of his state. This should happen by tomorrow or Friday.

Sorry about that, Kristen (the links).  Your profile doesn't say where you are.

Yes, well, I can see where your mom might be skeptical since cats hide their illnesses so well and will otherwise seem fine.  You saw the convulsion for yourself which means there is clearly *something* wrong; what it is, only a vet can diagnose.  Just like people who have convulsive disorders - they come out of it and seem fine, however, there's an underlying problem as you, yourself, seem to understand from your last sentence.  I'm so glad to hear he seems better and is eating and drinking normally - that's good.

You're a good mom to your kitty; he needs you to advocate for him so push your mom as best you can.  Good luck honey and let us know what comes of this.

He just finished eating and on his right side, just outside his ribs was all swollen. Like, noticeably swollen... I wish I could do more at this point... I just feel so hopeless. I tried opening commissions in art communities and mentioned what I was doing it for, and no one has even looked. I haven't been able to sleep or eat properly because I am very worried about him..

It seemed like he was doing so much better. I felt hopeful all day up until now. I don't what else I can do to help, and I'm scared... and I am sure he is scared too..

I talked to my mom for a few hours, and fully expressed myself, tears and all. She is going to take him to the vet on Friday for sure.

I went to the vet with him today. Apparently, his heart is not contracting as strongly as it should, I believe he said it was a heart mumur kind of thing called Cardiomypathy. The swelling in his abdomen is apparently fluid that his veins are expelling because there is a lot of blood kinda pooling in his veins so it needs to discard some moisture to work right. He said that the "convulsions" from earlier was probably the cat's heart slowing down and making him light headed, so Cyris was probably thrashing about in fear or shock.

He said that there is one treatment option. A medicine that makes the heart work less hard and thus slows the disease. Unfortunately, because cats are finicky, getting them to take this medicine every day for the rest of their lives generally stresses them out and makes their condition worse. According to the vet, some cats live just fine with the problem and a cat has a decent chance of living out a normal life span, but there is also the chance that one day he will just keel over and start mouth breathing and the likes.

I am still scared, and probably going to cry for a very long time. It is bad, but its not as bad as it could be. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell if he will be the kind of cat who lives to be only 11 or one who lives to be 18, and there is no way to reverse or cure the issue. I am glad we went. I am sad that it is what it is, but I am glad we at least know what it is.

I am going to save up some money and buy him a nice collar with a shiny tag that has his name on it, because he deserves something nice. I can't make his problem go away, and I cant make life any better for him, cause I am already giving it my all. I want to do nice things for him, and I want him to feel special because he is the most special to me.

Thank you guys for your help and understanding.

Aw, honey, I am so sorry to hear this.  Have you ever medicated Cyris before?  Is there a chance you guys could try?  Initially, yes, it might be a challenge, however, he might be like my Jade who's fairly easy to medicate.  There are written instructions in our Health Pages on how to *pill* a cat and there are videos on Youtube, even.  It might not be as hard as you think.  We had to medicate Jade for 4mos shortly after we got her and it didn't take long for my husband and I to have it wired so it went smoothly.  Afterward, give kitty a treat so he would associate the two and think the pill was a good thing.  If this is all impossible to do, I understand, but I hope you might just try to see how Cyris does.  He might surprise you.

Anyway, you did great in getting your mom to understand so at least you know what you're up against now.  Let us know if there's anything else we can do to help.  Big Hugs to you, Kirsten.  I'm So proud of you!  Cyris is very lucky to have you!...♥
