Found the vet record from last September when we took the girls in for shots and blood work, Hildie was a little over 17#, very much a rolly polly kitty. She's now about 12#, slender, but still has good muscle tone, gets up and down all the stairs just fine.
Miss Teia is a little over 12#, too, was almost 20# when we took her in.
It is wonderful that Hildie's diabetes is in remission. And, going with less dry and more canned will help the cats over all, too.
How cute that Teia tried to catch a grasshopper. Sometimes Akira gets to go hunting even inside the apartment here, because big house spiders sometimes come inside the apartment. She catches most of them, too.
Never see Loreena happier than the day she found a grasshopper :-)
She loved that much more any other small prey she already had found, I think I would have courage to buy some just for her fun, if they were available somewhere.
Thank God they are not - not where I live.Poor fellas...
Miss Hildie is definitely feeling better. This morning she went to the patio door and asked to be let out into the back yard.
Last evening, she and Teia went out, Hildie spotted something and for the first time exhibited hunting behavior (a grasshopper was her quarry).
Both girls did a full patrol of the entire perimeter, Teia almost got a grasshopper, too.
That is great news about Hildie's diabetes in remission!! YAYYYYY!!
Have not done away with dry food completely, but have gotten Hildie and Teia to eat a mix of Friskies Indoor and Blue Buffalo chicken kibble. Both are eating more canned food, however, which is much lower in carbs.
I think it also helped a lot that both are more active in the new house and have lost some weight. Neither Hildie nor Teia are heavy girls any more.
Wow....that is wonderful news Pip...amazing what good care and doing away with dry food can do for these diabetics....so happy for her!!!
Today's result for Hildiekatt, almost 42 hours after her last dose of 1 unit insulin, blood sugar is stable in the middle of the normal range.
Will check again in 2 weeks, but it looks like she has gone into remission!!!
Akira lies on her back like that a lot, too. It's really adorable when they do this. It also means that the cat is completely comfortable in her environment and with her people.
How wonderful! Such good news about your kitty.
Hildie doesn't mind being pictured like that as it is her favorite napping position.
I'll be taking her in tomorrow afternoon for another blood sugar check just to make sure we are on the right track for her.
Good news Pip, gone into remission is great.
You should have warned her she was being photographed :-)
Hi Piparskeggr,
We have a nine year old male ginger cat called Sammy. We adopted Sammy about three years ago from a cat rescue organization.
When we adopted Sammy, he weighed 20 lbs. and our vet used to describe him as obese. Our vet advised us to feed Sam a calorie
reduced diet. Here's the thing. He was losing about a lb a month which is a lot for a cat. This went on for a couple of months. Our vet agreed that Sam was losing too much weight too fast. Anyway, our vet decided to give Sam a blood test where it was discovered that Sam had diabetes.
Sam had diabetes for almost a year. The vet gave Sam a number of fructosamine tests to determine how many units of insulin to give him.
Like your cat, Sam eventually was down to one unit of insulin a day.
Our vet told us then that there are some cats that stop being diabetic and that she had a feeling that Sammy might be one of these cats.
Well the reason I am sharing this story with you is because Sammy is no longer diabetic. Sammy now eats Medi cal calorie reduced food ( not canned food though) and only a certain amount which has been determined by our vet. Perhaps this is what has happened to your cat.
Sammy has been diabetes free for over a year now. No more needles and no more insulin. Sammy is now 16 lbs. and very healthy. I wish you and your cat the best. Eve
