The Story of Little Chiclet

This is in honor of Chiclet, as sweet little black and white kitten who died in our home two days ago.

I'm going to make this pretty quick since the details are essentially irrelevent at this point.  But Chiclet wasn't irrelevent and I want everyone to know about him!

A couple of weeks ago we began fostering a black and white (tuxedo!) kitten, about three months old.  One thing led to another with vet care, tests, etc.  but he got sick about a week ago.  Basically respiratory infection and kidney problems, catastrophic diarrhea leading to kidney failure, etc.

He didn't respond to medication and treatment as we would have liked and he went very quickly - just went to sleep in the evening two days ago and didn't wake up.  We were going to put him to sleep the next day, but I guess he wanted to go at home with his family.  What is amazing to me is that he passed very shortly after I spoke to him, telling him that maybe it was time for him to go along to the next stage, that he could be happier if he just rested.  I guess he believed me.

Before he got sick he was playful and silly but wouldn't let us touch him much.  As he got sick he started to want to be touched and began very quickly to love being in my lap and being petted.  He was very patient with being fed and medicated.

He was very sweet and I miss him.  He wasn't with us long, but he was appreciated and loved.

Thanks everybody.

Oh yes, I could name several cats who should be playing in that group!  Including old Tubby, who was almost as long-lived as Pond Scum (I will always love that name!).

If nothing else, thank you for the thought, it made me smile!

I really believe our cats and dogs "talk" to us and that Chiclet waited for you, in her own way, until she let go.  I hope little Chiclet is running around eating and playing in "cat heaven" with our old man Pond Scum who blessed us with his presence for 24 years.

Well, to answer your questions...

They are rescue kitties and we foster some of the ones who cannot tolerate being in a cage even temporarily (some of them just don't have the temperament for it - I wouldn't!) or adults who haven't been adopted in a while and shouldn't have to be in a cage any longer, if possible.

We are certainly not the only ones doing it here, we work with a "rescue team" in connection with a shelter and at least one vet (they come and go with us).

We have our  fuzzies who were rescued the same way.  We get calls from people who can't keep their cats for some reason and sometimes, if we can, we pick them up especially if they are being neglected or abused in some way.  We go out and trap them when we can and we have other people who do that for us as well.  There is never a lack of feral and abandoned cats.

We do dogs as well, but in this area there just aren't as many stray dogs.  There are dogs we get calls about, from their owners, which is fine.  If we get a call from someone about someone elses dog, well, there are legal issues with that sort of thing.

Anyway, it is very hard to give them up.  I have to tell myself that keeping them, when there is a good place for them to go, would be selfish and prevent me from helping another.  But there have been times when it was almost impossible to let one go.  And, like I say, we have are permanents who are cats that we didn't give up.  Technically, all our cats are rescue fosters and should be up for adoption.  But not only do we fall in love with them but some of them would pine away if given up again as often they don't trust easily.  Not to mention, there are so many needing a home that sometimes nothing happens, mostly with adults and those that have special emotional needs.  Oddly enough, phsyically disabled cats adopt out pretty quickly.

As to room, time (and finances) for all of them, well, thats not a subject to get Savas started on!  We don't got em!!  But, what can you do!

Emily Autumn, by the way, had a breakthrough last night.  We bonded somewhat playing with her grubby little ball and now she sits on my foot when I'm cooking and lets me pet her a little bit sometimes.  Especially if there is a treat involved!  I think I may do a running journal post about her, since she's the newest member!

Also, I can't watch those kind of things either.  Unless I'm involved somehow, I just can't bear it and even then!  Also, it's preaching to the choir, so to speak, and I don't see why I should put myself though it, you know!

Thanks guys.

I agree with Sara!  What you and Mr. S do is awesome!  I wish that I had the room and the time to foster some kitties!!  Maybe in the future, but I don't think I could give them back-I get way too attached!  LOL

Do you just foster these kitties or do you end up keeping them?  Are these rescue kitties??  Either way what you do is wonderful........sara

Irene, that's exactly it - even a brief life deserves love and recognition.  Thanks.

On the plus side, we are also fostering another little one who is doing great!  Her name is Emily Autumn.  She's came in at the same time as Chiclet, she's a little older than he was.

She has passed all her tests and therefore has joined our kitty community who are not too upset by her, luckily :)  (Chiclet was here in our home but obviously had to be isolated from the other cats) Emily doesn't really trust people yet, but we're working on that together.  She is really enjoying the wonders of being warm (after being outside in the winter - yuck) and having a little red and white ball to play with!

So, that's a yay!

You did a wonderful job telling Chiclet's story. Even a brief life deserves love and recognition. I know this is hard on you but I admire the hard work and devotion you give to these kitty cat friends. Thank you.

I am so, so sorry about this kitten. It is always hard to watch them go, or to let them go. This kitten was really sick according to what you describe. It's a shame he did not respond to treatment. So he died in his sleep?

May this precious creature rest in peace. He deserves it.

Regards,
PK

Very sad to read this, how quickly these little fur balls win our hearts. At least you were there for his short little life and nursed him til the end so he wasn't alone.  Rest in peace little Chiclet, boo hoo.
