Why has my cats fur changed colour?

My parents black long haired cat has turned orange.  We're really confused.  It wasn't sudden, it has happened over a few years.  She is about 10 or 11 years old, spends most of her time outside.  She doesn't have any rashes or scabs on her skin, and seems healthy.  Her head and extremities are still black but her body is orange.  Does anyone know why?
