Tramadol

Just wondering if anyone is currently taking Tramadol on a regular basis?
I saw my NS today and was telling him about the pain I was in and the problems I was having and that I was currently trying to avoid Norco and taking more Ibuprofen. Well he is referring me to Physical Therapy (yeah, I'm hoping it helps me out) and also massage therapy and prescribed me Tramadol. He said to take it every 6 hours everyday as it is not an 'as needed medication' like Norco or Ibuprofen.
Anyone with any experience with this medication and whether it will provide some relief. Dr said once I start PT, I'll be grateful I started it prior.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum....

The members in this forum are using the med Tramadol for Chiari related pain and not for a knee replacement..

Sorry you are having this pain and issue with your meds....I hope your Dr is able to offer you relief with the manipulation.

Have any of you been using Tramadol hcl for pain of a total knee replacement, I take 50 mg and it does not help with the pain, I am now going to have a knee manipulation and he will not increase the strength of my meds.

I'm currently on Tramadol 50 mg....but only "as needed".  I find it helps with the pain from muscle spasms -- which is currently the only pain I have, thank goodness!  This was prescribed to me by my new pain management MD, as the one that "dismissed" me from her practice only wanted to shove Dilaudid at me (which I balked at=dismissal from practice)!   I'm finding that, as I heal, I've been able to go longer and longer without needing it...but we're all very different.

I've been having insomnia like crazy--waking every 2 hr. all night long--& a Chiari friend said it's probably the Tramadol.
I feel like I can't win, treating pain.  The hydrocodone worked well, other than the nuisance of constipation.  I don't think I can get that Rx re-filled though.
Ibuprofen works fine; I just wonder if Im going to have kidneys left.
What meds have people found helpful?

Tramodol helps me tremendously with my neck and shoulder pain.  does not help the headaches though

don't get.me wrong it works fairly well. but with.increase dosage , lowers  your.seizures threshold.. especially if taken with other meds like certain anti deppresants.

Our little girl of three years gets tramaldol for her neuropathic pain, and this medicine gives her a big reliëf. She only gets it in the morning and Just before sleeping, and if needed beween half the dosis. She gets this because other medication is less "healthy". she also needs to take something for her obstipation (the only Side effect of tramadol she gets). For us, this is a good option for now but also Understand you get used to this medicine, and Will need more in time.
Good luck finding something which give you some relief.

@ceo83, no not Toradol, I am taking Tramadol, AKA Ultram.
Did u have the bad experience with Tramadol or Toradol? I've done Toradol for my migraines previous to surgery and it did nothing!
@Sexy - I had surgery in 7/10, so that puts me at about 12 1/2 weeks post op...so Im like 3 months out. I was off the Norco (in the sense that I wasn't needing it on a regular basis)  probably right around where u are, maybe closer to 8 weeks. I still take it if I need to for intense pain but I try not to because the purpose of this surgery was to get me off so many meds (pre-surgery I literally was living off Norco, taking them like Tic Tacs)

i Will tell you from experience and tramadol can be habit forming and to me is the devil!!! It is horrible to come off , the withdrawals are worst than coming off the norco... Look more into it, research it. you will be surprised at what you find.... Just so that you know, there is misconception of tramadol that isnt habit forming, because is not a controlled substance.

Yeah that's true about meds being different for everyone. I have extreme allergic reaction to codeine in its put form (Tylenol w/ codeine or any cough syrup w/ codeine) but I can take hydrocodone which is a dirivative, but it gives me nervous energy, I can't sleep and have a hard time sitting still and not going a thousand miles a minute.
When I was discharged from hospital post-surgery I was prescribed Toradol along with my Norco and a hand ful of other meds. But since I was taking so many I couldn't really know what was making me feel any particular way. I told my NS today that I was trying not to take my Norco unless absolutely necessary and was leaning more toward Ibuprofen. He said Toradol was a better fit...so we shall see how it plays out...

I tried tramadol for a few months, didn't do anything for me, but please remember we are all different and drugs affect us all different. Hoping it helps you.....alls we can do is try until we find what works for us individually. Its suppose to be good drug and non habit forming ;)
