Hi, thanks so much for all your help guys. Sorry i didnt get back to you all sooner but I have been having MRI's like crazy. I had to have a MRI for a mass that they found on my wrist. The Dr. tried to take a sample of the fluid from it (WOW did that hurt) but he couldnt get any so off to the MRI I went. I also got my thoracic spine MRI from 2007 cuz I have sever pain there. Well i go to see Dr. Bejjani tomorrow for the cervical spine one but it looks like I may have syrinx in my thoracic spine MRI. I dont no how the doctor could have over looked that? Well I'll find out tomorrow what Dr. Bejjani thinks of the MRI from 3 years ago. I have been suffering for so long with pain I hope to get answers tomorrow. (Oh and I have scoliosis as well ) Please pray that I do. Again thanks to all.

Hi Alicia,
I have disc problems as well, OA in my cervical spine and dessicated discs in my thoracic (no herniation yet- so they say). I agree that I don't think Chiari causes these things but I think it is a huge factor in why we go from being fairly asymptomatic to all of a sudden symptomatic. That was how my NS explained it to me, he said most of the time symptoms would start appearing due to a change in your cervical spine.
However, you do want to ask your NS about it to make sure that it isn't also compressing your spinal cord...like Big Jim said, it could be causing some of your symptoms too if it is.
Take care
Carolyn
I have a cervical disc prolapse that is ever so slightly pressing on my spinal cord. I highly doubt this was directly caused by the Chiari but I assume it could be due to some other bone defect given our smaller than normal posterior fossa's. It is likey just a by product of aging.
If I recall correctly it was C4/C5 but may have been C5/C6. It is my opinion, and let me state again, my non-professional non-doctor opinion, that a cervical disc prolapse compressing the spinal cord can cause some symptoms that mimick Chiari and Syringomyelia.
I was dx with DDD when I was quite young.....I also was told about a bulging disk yrs ago which I was told was causing no issues...even up until I went in for my PFD it was fine...however it shifted after surgery and is now causing a CSF blockage similar to a herniation with chiari ...so the symptoms r very similar. I must add that the area of my disk bulge is also in an area where I have stinosis...a narrowing of the spine...so this makes it that much more of a problem.
Chiari does not cause it, but it is related.
