Hi...what u have to keep in mind about what u see on line is those that get better leave sites like this, and those that have not continue to look for help.
I had a positive experience with my surgery and I do still have symptoms, but that is not a bad result it is just reality of chiari and related conditions. Many of us, myself included do have other related issues going on as well as chiari, so these may be the reason we r not feeling as well as those that leave and do not let us know how well they r.
Next, not all with chiari r surgical candidates, and the fact ur Dr only has done one surgery means he/she is not a chiari specialist...not conservative....u need someone with experience with this condition to look at it to see just how it may be affecting ur overall health.
What is most important more than the size of ur herniation is the width...the 9mm is the length....
I have not used this analogy lately so I will do it here...
Imagine the base of ur skull like a funnel...ur herniation like shoestring licorice...long and thin running thru the funnel, no matter how long it will not obstruct flow of a liquid...but, imagine it was thicker, even shorter like a gumdrop...place that upside down in the opening and it will cork it up.
Then u have the odontoid that can be retroflexed (turned the wrong way) which will make the opening smaller...so that alone can cause an issue...so Drs that only look at the mm of herniation r not well informed on how chiari could affect u and ur overall health.
Do get a few opinions, and always get copies of all tests...MRI's and reports...this will make getting those opinions easier.

Thanks for the response gals! I was worried that something else might be wrong but it sounds like so much leads to this! No Sexybare I did not have the surgery. I have a very busy two year old and am trying to get prego so right now the idea of being laid up seems very alarming. The neuro I saw about this said even though mine was on the large side 9mm I really was not in that bad of shape. Then again when I asked how many people he has done the surgery on his answer was one person so obviously he is conservative in this area. I would have gone to a specialist but to be honest from many posts I read there are a lot of people that get little relief from the surgery. So on I march but I am very glad I have you all to reach out to when I need it.
Hi...yes this is very possible as the other 2 have stated...and it can have to do with where ur obstruction is...if ur herniation is more to one side and the way u had ur head it may have cause more CSF flow to be disrupted causing the symptoms u experienced when u got up.
I used to have that b4 surgery...so I do know what u mean....
Everything that bothers us may not be chiari, but it may be related to it somehow...that is JMHO.

I have the problem as you do when it comes to laying your head down in the same way for a peroid of time. I to think it cut's off our csf flow. I get this feeling a lot when I look up or have my neck down for a peroid of time. Some time's it feel's like my head is going to fall off, or at times it feel's like some one hit me in the head with a baseball bat. We all have so many different symptom's but seem's like the same out come's. Headaches. It seem's no matter what I do I deal with headaches daily.
I hope you have a better day.
Hi..its not weird to believe. All of us chiarians get all thee weird feelings that are scary and alarming. I do believe that every pain I have is because of chiari. Have you jad surgery? It may be that you were cutting off csf flpw by the way u were laying for so long. If u had surgery and have a scar, like me, theres no way I can lay on the back of my head at all.
