Chiari Specialists near DC?

Hello, I am looking for my second opinion and trying to find a specialist anywhere near DC, or Northern VA. I was diagnosed with a "small chiari" in 2008 and never had trouble with it until recently some symptoms started and a "small syrinx" was found. Neurosurgeon recommending decompression surgery but I want a second opinion before I make the final decision. At this point, I am pretty sure I am going to go through with it, as soon as possible, as I feel like I am some sort of walking time bomb and my anxiety is out of control. Thanks for any info!

Thank you for the info! Were you happy with your decompression surgery? Was the experience, overall, successful and pain tolerable?

Hi. I grew up near D.C, but currently live in Virginia Beach. When I was given my diagnosis I researched near by specialist. What I decided was to go to Johns Hopkins. I see Dr. Judy Huang (pronounced Wong). Of course she's part of a large group, but she is who I go to. I trust & feel very comfortable with her (I work in the Operating room, I'm very picky with my selection). She did my decompression last year. Also, on a list I've seen there's a specialist at The University of Virginia School of Medicine.

Since a syrinx is already formed, you ust have a CSF obstruction.....it would be in your interest that the Dr do more testing for other related conditions as it can help the Dr  know the best way to proceed with treatment.

Knowing surgery is not a cure but a means to slow progression and restore CSF flow....symptoms can remain or return during the healing process.....

Take your time in selecting your Dr....and when you do have a surgery date add it to the list your surgery date thread so a prayer thread can be posted for you.....wishing you the best.
