6 year old boy fear

How do I, his grandmother, and his widowed mother, (4 years ago), address my grandsons' fears of the TV news that regarding murder and/or break-ins.  He "picks up" this information only in passing by or changing TV staions by remote. This information has become very disturbing to him, particularly at night when it's bedtime.  He does not want to sleep alone.  His mother and I (co-parent) wonder about his continuing desire to sleep with her or with me (even before the news fears).

Other than the TV information fears and wanting to sleep with one of us he is doing well ---- enjoys schools (no behavior problems), plays football, has friends, speaks openly of his father having died of cancer. He does not seem to have any other issues.

How do we deal with this ?
