Ever since I was a child I bite my lip till it bleeds

I couldn't stop biting my lip until I was 16. Which is now. I have noticed a white patch on my lower lip on the side, exterior. It won't go away. I stopped bothering it 6months ago. I exfoliate it. Still nothing. It is very bad and I think it's permanent but it's just a white patch. Someone help me? Please! Thank you all answers are greatly appreciated

I've bitten my lip incessantly since I was a kid. Been gluten free now 2 years & I've stopped completely! I'm 52 now & even the thought makes me wonder how I could have done it! It's horrible! My grown up kids used to get cross with me too! I think there may be a connection to coeliac disease though I haven't been tested as I can't face eating gluten for 6 weeks. Wish there was another way to find out!! I have been ill my whole life too & always felt on the 'outside' of life around me. Parents never believed I was ill as a child either because there was nothing to really see, just me saying I felt unwell, sick, tired, just bleurgh most of the time.. & insomniac.. Grew up thinking I was just paranoid. But ended up v v Ill at 37 & ended up with ME/CFS. Homeopath told me cut out wheat & milk, which I did & got better!! Still didn't connect in my brain!! So eventually went back to eating these once well ( though I have been surviving on 50% of the energy I should have for my age & was constantly Ill & bleurgh.. still) till I went gluten free completely!! I have other issues now too though, I think because my body has been fighting the gluten for 50 years! But the lip biting..... GONE!! Sorry that was so drawn out lol but incredulous to find articles linking lip biting & coeliac recently! My rheumatologist laughed at me when I asked if there may be a connection about a year ago! I say listen to your body & trust your instincts.. Always :)

I agree with Sandman about seeing the dermatologist.  I don't mean to sound alarmist,  but  it sounds like the beginning stages of oral cancer, which is often caused by lip biting.

It might well be some kind of scar tissue.  I would not exfoliate it.   Cortisone might help.   But, I think that a visit to a dermatologist would be the best idea.
