my son has these pains too--in his legs and feet every night.  our doctor said it's growing pains as long as it's not interfering with his daytime play.

My son, around the age of 4-5, seemed to complain frequently (at night and first thing in the morning), that his hands hurt.  I too asked the doctor who said that it could be growing pains, or that sometimes it is a sign of too much sodium in their diet.  I was worried too that it could be something more serious, but my doctor said that kids with juvenile arthritits are usually very sick, and it usually only effects one joint at a time.
Hope this helps.
