Terrified need help

I've had a hamster for about almost 4 months and my 4 year old was very good with him. Occasionally he would pick him up the wrong way or hold him too tight but nothing alarming. I was gonna shower really quick and as always I put my hamster away so my son couldn't get him since he has a tendency of letting him loose in the house. I got in the shower really quick and when I got out my son walked in and told me he had killed Rigby he was dead in his hand and my only reaction was to grab the hamster from him. His body was limp and I started crying not knowing what to do. I finally pulled myself together and burried him. I asked my son what happened and he said he hit him but won't say with what. When I asked why he says he doesn't know. He seemed more upset that I was upset than the fact that he had just killed the hamster. I'm taking him to talk to someone on Monday because I'm worried. I'm 25 weeks pregnant but am I over reacting?

That being said, I would not buy pets in the near future. You need to have your son evaluated.

Not necessarily.  This behavior could be mere experimentation given his age.  I think that it is very healthy that he shows remorse for his behavior.  I would be very concerned if he was indifferent to this behavior and showed no remorse.  I wouldn't be so concerned about this behavior.  However, it is always a good idea to check out the behavior with a therapist.
