It sounds like he is not doing well as is, so do you know the side effects and risks of the medication the doctor suggested? If you can watch him closely for problems and know it is pretty safe than I'd say go ahead and try the medication. I'm not a huge fan of medicating kids but I also think that if the child is so challenged and isn't showing progress through other methods then it may be the only option for a decent quality of life. Does he get any services through the school or your healthcare for his issues? An evaluation was helpful but are they offering any therapy at all? If not, you may need to push the issue and advocate for him to get psychological and/or therapeutic services. If your healthcare would cover it, you might have better luck getting a referral from his doctor to find a private practice rather than going through the school system.
Let me clarify, he's 12 yrs old, has learning disabilities (nothing specific) has been tested for ADD/ADHD, ODD, Depression, Dyslexia and others. Nothing fits. He has "perception issues" in that he doesn't take social cues well. He is argumentative with teachers and authority figures. A short time on zoloft made him bow up to me (his mother) we took him off that. He has been psychologically eval'd by the school and is listed "at risk" for retaliation. He used to bully, but now is the one being bullied almost contstantly. The school will not do anything about the others and the police won't do anything either.
Any suggestions will be helpful.....
