behavioural problems in nine year old

My nine year old grandson has stopped eating.  It all started when we had a bad experience when sucking a
lollipop which caught in his throat. After that episode he would only eat soft food - ice cream etc.
He then developed a pattern of howling, and demanding his mother be with him all the time.  when she was at
work the howling was unbearable and could go on all day.   He then stopped eating and driinking altogether and was
brought to accident and emergency to be re-hydrated.  Spent about 8 days there and was referred from there to
A psychiatric unit for children, where he attends on a daily basis.  He is still refusing to eat and is surviving
on vitamin drinks.   He is so full of anger and lashes out at his parents, kicking and screaming and says he
will be dead by his 10th birthday, and wonder how long it will take him to "waste away".   This was a perfectly
normal little boy prior to the lollipop episode.  This is very upsetting and affects all the family and the
wider family circle.  His mother is distraught and doesnt know where to go from here, but is assured by the
centre he will eventually take food.

They are assessing him at the moment and are reluctant to give any
medication.  they are unable to acertain what caused this sudden change in
behaviour but it all would seem to tie in to the near choking episode.  each time
he is questioned the answer is "I cannot eat - i will choke.
