12 Month old Miserable every day at certain times!!

My son just turned 1 and for quite some time now I've had issues with him being difficult from around 2 pm until he eats his dinner at 5ish. It's only when we are home. I cannot figure out why. The last 2 days he has woken up from his nap screaming and will continue until he has supper. I give him a snack in between so I don't think he is hungry. Once something sets him off....he is done. Sometimes the only way to keep him quiet and from screaming is to just hold him on my lap. He is teething right now but is that normal?
Any other time of day and he is ok....it is literally every day between 2 and 5! It's very stressful and frustrating. Especially when I care for other children a few days a week, half the time I am preparing supper through this and I'm newly pregnant.
Please tell me I'm not alone and this is just a phase! Any suggestions on how to battle this?

I'm glad you got an answer.  And I agree with the others.  Ear infections are no fun for the little guys at all.  Good news is once they start the antibiotics, they clear up pretty quickly.  Feel better little Brady!

I made my response before reading yours. So no it is all settled. Ear infections are unfortunately all too common in the babies. Glad to hear that the little kiddie will be all right.

This worked for me. I would turn on the faucet of the kitchen sink to very cool, but not cold. Then I would hold my baby face up over the sink and bathe her head under the cool water. She would immediately relax and even sigh. This "tantrum" would always take place in the afternoon. My guess was that she got overheated. Anyway, this is harmless and worth a try. I would not use Advil, Tylenol, or any other medications. Even the most benign have side effects.

Ok, sooo. My mom took him to the doctors for me since I had children to look after today. It is an ear infection and it's a pretty bad one too. I'm so glad I got him in. He actually woke up from him morning nap screaming and I thought "THAT'S IT!!" I'm happy I know now, it's so hard to tell. He took his first few teeth like a champ but now he's cutting molars so I couldn't tell. Poor thing!

It could certainly be due to teething, if hes upset even when he doesn't see other children around , once he cuts them he will feel better,I still agree with Mom some jealousy could be involved ..good luck I am sure he will be okay soon.its tough when you cant do anything for them .

My mom thought jealousy but he still acts that way on the days I don't have kids. He actually doesn't seem jealous at all from the other kids, which I thought odd. He is such a momma's boy that I thought having other kids here would be an issue and he's actually great.
He is still on the 2 nap deal. He sleeps from 7pm until 7am and goes down for a morning nap at 9 for an hour to an hour and a half. Then he goes down again in the afternoon. He fights the afternoon nap a lot lately, espeically if the other kids are here.

You know, just thinking about the nap thing.  At 12 months we were still doing an hour and a half in the morning and again in the afternoon.  Not sure if that's average for all 12 month olds, but Ryder sure needed it.  Wake up time was (and still is) about 7, nap around 10:30 and another around 2:30.  Now it's still wake up around 7, nap 11:30 to 1:30 app.

How long a nap is he taking?  I just know that if my little man doesn't get enough sleep, that is the one time I can count on him being out of sorts.  He's a bit older then Brady...22 months this month.  He still sleeps about 11 hours at night, and a good 2 hour nap during the day.  If he misses it, he is incredibly fussy.  And yes, the teething could be the culprit as well.  Infant tyelenol as Diva suggested combined with cold things to naw on worked well for us.

Good luck, it's not fun when they are super cranky.

It is possible that he sees you his mom paying attention to the other children you look after ,may I ask their ages?Do you look after them in the hours he is upset .?

I've given him Tylenol, I find Advil works better...it lasts longer and is best with swelling from teething but yesterday I gave him a dose and he went down for a nap, then woke up screaming. I've had a couple people mention a possible ear infection so I may take him in to see. It's so hard to tell between teething pain and an ear infection.

Have you tried giving him any Infant Tylenol? You could also give him the numbing cream for his gums. I don't remember what that is called.
