Life Expectancy

My mother is 57 years old, drinks a 5th of 190 proof golden grain over the course of 1 - 2 days, every day.  She refuses to stop drinking.  Been through rehab once, unsuccessful attempt.  I do not live near her, so I am unable to go to the doctors appointments with her.  She swears the doctors tell her, her liver levels are normal and nothing is wrong with her other than vitamin deficiancies and blood pressure issues.

I have noticed for years now that she has symptoms of cirrhosis.  I have tried calling her doctors, but because of hippa, I cannot get any info.

I honestly in my heart think she has less than a year left to live on the path she is on.  I think she is in final stages.

Symptoms include:
Esophagus issues - prevents her from swallowing food and even causes her to vomit at times.  Can only keep liquids down majority of the time.
Lack of appetite - maybe takes 10 bites of food a day.
Losing control of bodily functions - bowel movements very watery, accidents in public, hard time urinating.
Bruising - for no apparent reason
Jaundice - yellowing eyes and skin
Swelling - started in the feet, stomach and is now in her face.

Since I cannot speak with doctors and I cannot take time off from work to visit on a regular basis, what would her life expectancy be, since she is refusing to stop the drinking?

I am sorry to hear about your mom, unfortunately until she is ready to stop drinking there is really nothing you can do. Please keep in mind we are volunteers that share our own experiences and knowledge we have learned along the way. As Hector stated only a doctor with access to her medical file would dare to answer your question. However the human body is not capable of enduring that type of alcohol abuse for a long period of time but that amount of time is different in every situation.

Sorry we couldn't off more help. Take care,

Randy

Unfortunately without the all medical facts no one, including a doctor, could venture to say.

Many of the symptoms you mention are not signs of cirrhosis, so who can say what her true medical status is.

Your mother may not even understand her medical condition(s). The only way to learn more is to go to one of her doctor appointments and ask questions.

Good luck to you and your mother.
