Help? Do I Need a Second Opinion? Please Advise.

Dear MedHelp,

I am really freaking out right now because I don't know what to do. Last year in May I went to a dentist and upon examination felt an uneasiness about his diagnosis. He claimed that I had "9" (!!) cavities. I'm not a dentist at all but for some reason I had a gut instinct that he was wrong. But I didn't question him because he had the X-Rays in front of me and was pointing out these "anomolies" out to me. At any rate, not one to start questioning the "experts", he drilled 7 of the teeth. Then when I went to get the last 2 teeth done, I saw another dentist (it's a clinic) because the first one didn't work Saturday. When he looked at the first dentist's charts and my X-Rays, he said he didn't understand why one of the two teeth were marked as having cavities, because he saw no evidence of any. Then he said that maybe the first dentist had accidentally marked the upper rather than the lower teeth as having a cavity???

Today I went back to the same guy and he immediately informed me that I had "6" (!!) cavities. Then he looked at my X-Rays wondering "what was going on here" (for me to have 6 cavities). Then he goes, "Hmm, maybe the problem is that your teeth are so crooked that they're making it look like you have cavities when you don't." (I have badly rotated teeth). Then next thing you know, I'm being scheduled for 6 more fillings.

Should I get a second opinion or am I just being paranoid? Like I said, I don't know a thing about dentistry but something tells me that there's something amiss here!

Hi,
A second opinion is always warranted if there is a questionable diagnosis.

You'd be doing yourself a favor in getting one.

Best to you,
Gellia
