Medication for depression for PMS

Is there any medication that is effective to use prior to my menstrual cycle that would alleviate anxiety and depression?  I don't want to take medication on a daily basis, but need something during that time of the month.

Hi There I have an under-active thyroid and it causes hormonal depression, heavy, light
irregular periods. PMS is through the roof when you've got this, before I ever knew I had this problem my PMS was horrendous. I went to the gym and did two or three classes on the run trying to get rid of a this stress and anxiety, depression.
You could try high doses of evening primrose oil, B Vits. You can also get progesterone cream privately you rub it on the inside of your arms, skin is thin there to absorb, use it twice aday fourteen days leading up to your period then stop for 14 days.
I use progesterone suppositores off the Dr, but if your not diagnosed you mat have trouble getting these you would in England. I am on 2 x 400 mg's 14 days leading up. II aso take an anti-depressant there's no shame we need to beable to cope and survive.
I would advise you get your thyroid checked out, let me know how you get on!!
Kind Regards
Lorraine xx

Good luck.  I was also told that there can be a psychological effect to the pms so that could also be a possibility.  That was from a male so I'm not sure how credible that is.

Thanks for the help!  I actually started taking something called Mood Solution by Twin Lab this past Monday.  You're supposr to take it 3x a day.  I unexpectedly started my period on Saturday and had TERRIBLE depression the Friday before.  Maybe I haven't been on the supplement long enough yet?  I feel much better now, so we'll see how it works.

My suggestion is to see a naturopath and try some natural hormone balancing before trying medication.  Taking an ssri for PMS will get you on a drug long-term that does nothing for the underlying problem.  Evening primrose oil is a pretty good suggestion for starters; you might also try a Chinese herb called D-o-n-g Quai (they'll censor it without the dashes), but there are many formulas and topical creams you can use before you need resort to medication and all its side effects.  Good luck.

Not sure.  My doctor recommended prozac.  OK, so pms or pmdd can't be that bad, right?

Have you tried evening primrose oil or something like that?

There are meds you can take for symptomatic relief of anxiety.

Have you spoken to your doctor about your mood and menstrual cycle?  They may be able to offer some suggestions.
