Problems with speech and thinking clearly/focusing

Hello all!

I was diagnosed with depression/anxiety disorder about 8 years ago and have been on several meds since. Starting with Paxil, Cymbalta, and now Wellbutruin. I have used Wellbutrin the longest, and have for probably 4-5 years. Anyway, I don't know if this is depression related or not but here goes.

For years now, I have been unable to think clearly and focus on tasks. Even what would seem to be the easiest of questions are hard for me to answer or remember at times. It is extremely frustrating. To go along with this, I have been unable to speak/enunciate clearly during this same period of time. People have a hard time understanding me and often I need to repeat myself.

I am 28 years old now. This started towards the end of my college career thank goodness and didn't effect my grades. I mean, come on, in HS and college I was a 3.5-3.8 GPA student who didn't even need to study to pass tests and had no problems remembering things.

Do you guys have any opinions on this or perhaps another subforum I should be posting this in? Thanks!

Hi there,

Yes the symptoms you describe are certainly possible depression effects. Or even med side effects. Haven't used those meds myself.

At age 28 though I feel it is more than just the effects of depression and that some other issue is causing this. The confusion and inability to focus is depression central but the speech issue is not, although it could be a result of the confusion etc. Do you tend to talk quietly and mumble? I do but I think I'm being clear and I often have to say something 2 or more times to some people.

Be aware though that if you are basing that problem on just a couple of people it could just be THEIR hearing.

I say see the doc and ask to be referred to a specialist on the effetcs you mention, the talking specifically.

If a med is working the confusion and lack of concentration does relieve considerablt to allow you to function OK. So if that isn't happeneing it could just be the wrong meds as Opus suggests.

Good luck.

hi....I believe all the medications that you have listed are all for depression.
Most of the symptoms you have described are associated with anxiety and to my knowledge these meds aren't usually prescribed for this disorder alone.
Its usually a benzodiazapine for anxiety. ie: valium, ativan, klonopin etc.
this is my opinion only.
You need to check this out further with you're doctor, are you seeing a psychiatrist?
good luck.

I do not know what forum you should be posting this to but I can relate.  Wellbutruin is actually supposed to help with that. I take aderall for that and helps me with this problem, I should say sometimes not always.   To tell you my honest opinion I think that sometimes the medications that I am taking are what are causing me to not think correctly.  Do you have anxiety when you are talking to people? Will you please give me some more examples of what happens when you are experiencing memory loss or having trouble talking? Have you had any bad side effects with these medications? Are you taking anything else?
