Your a1c needs to be BELOW 7% to even consider pregnancy.

If your a1c is much higher and the pregnancy is unplanned, chances are good that you'll have a very unhealthy baby and very LARGE baby.

I'm a type one diabetic and accidentally got pregnant by my boyfriend last year - I didn't hesitate for one second to abort because my a1c was high (besides not being ready).  If you can't keep your blood sugar under control now, what makes you think you can have super tight control for the full 9 months of pregnancy?  I think it is extremely irresponsible to consider inflicting such harm on your fetus, but then again I don't know what your beliefs are on abortion.

If you CANNOT abort for whatever reason, just know that the first trimester is critical for a growing fetus and if your blood sugars are not kept within NORMAL range, it can have severe effects on your baby.

I also have genital herpes and i really want my baby to be as healthy as possible if i am pregnant. The only issues I have right now are financial and im having insurance issues. anyone know of an insurance that will help me with my diabetic testing supplies?

I agree, please go to an endocrinologist. When I started going to my endo I had an a1c of 12% - he told me that I shouldn't even consider pregnancy for awhile. (I'm 19 and not sexually active, so it wasn't really an issue, lol...)

My Mom had been a Diabetic for 16 years when she was unexpectedly pregnant with me.  She had been told by a few doctors that she was infertile, so she was shocked/really happy (LOL, once she got over the shock) when she found out she was pregnant.

She had about 3 people tell her to abort - her endo, my lovely father, and her boss.  She knew that I was the only baby she was going to have a chance at, and refused.  I remember her talking about how happy she was when an x-ray/ultrasound technician told her I didn't have spina bifida, because they could see my spinal cord had closed.

She told me later that I was the reason she got her sugars under control, at least for those 7 months.  I say 7 months because her kidneys failed and she ended up having an emergency c-section approx. 2.5 months early.

Despite all this, I turned out healthy - I'm also a Diabetic, but I have no ill effects, other than a nostril that is larger than the other, due to my feeding tube. :P

Just, please, monitor your sugars like a hawk if you want this baby.
If you have to test 10+ times a day (I'd recommend alternate site testing so you still have fingers), so be it.  It's not just your health, it's another being's, too.

First and foremost, you need to see an endocrinologist: a diabetic/metabolic specialist.

From there, the endo should recommend a ob/gyn that specializes in diabetic/high risk pregnancies.

I do know for a fact that the first 10 weeks is the most crucial for the developing fetus. Any high blood sugars within the first 10 weeks can make or break your pregnancy.

You should also try to go on an insulin pump! This will bring your numbers down quick!!!
