Yes, thank you for rescuing these poor dogs.
Agree with all the above. Are they crated together or separate?
I woukd not use rug cleaner. Use an enzyme cleaner made to clean pet urine or you can use a diluted solution of vinegar and water, the smell will go away.
If they are drinking normally and the weather isn't hot, don't give them water an hour or two before you leave and don't leave any in the crates at bed time.
If the crates are large enough, put their beds or blankets at the back of the crate and shredded newspaper up toward the front. This may encourage them to at least go on the paper. If you have an X-pen, put the crates inside the x-pen with the doors removed. Again, blankets inside and newspaper outside. You can cover your floor with a plastic tarp. This may help recondition them to not soil their crates. Of course, when you are home, let them out regularly and praise and treat when they potty outside. Yes, time and patience.
Welcome to the forum....You don't say how long you have had them.......You already sound frustrated, so I hope you have had them a good length of time.....
LoveMyBostons is spot on.......These dogs have more than likely been locked in cages and had no choice of where to potty.....They know no different....This was how they were raised for 6 years!!!! They must be taught differently from you.....
How long are they staying in these crates??? Dogs that are not potty trained do not know how to hold their bladders.....It must be learned.....
Yes, the cages do need to be cleaned regularly......Doesn't matter if it helps the pottying issues, they still need to be cleaned with a pet cleaner.....Carpet cleaners usually have too much scent & chemicals for dogs.....A good spray pet cleaner is what you need.....
They also need those blankets for comfort.......Please remember, this is ALL new to them......These kind of dogs are my favorites!!! I LOVE watching the transformation & teaching them how it should have been all along.......
Like Lovemybostons said, "time and patience" is definately the key!!!! The last puppy mill guy I trained (That lived in a cage for his first 4 years) took a year and a half to finally understand & get trained!!! But, I enjoyed it!!
Thank you for adopting these two...Kudos to you!!!! Let us know how it's going....Karla
Thank you for rescuing them! Unfortunately, since they came from a breeder they are probably used to relieving themselves in their cage. It sounds like you crate them together? It could be that the crate is too large and gives them a "living corner" and a "peeing corner." I would suggest frequent potty breaks to help retrain them to go outside and lots and lots of rewards (praise, petting, treats) when they do their business outside. Punishment after the fact (like when you get home & find pee) will not teach them anything. If you do catch one in the act, you need to redirect the behavior by picking him/her up & placing them outside. I wish you good luck & patience. With time they will learn what is expected of them.
