Cat nursing tiny chihuahua pup

A week ago Saturday, my chug had to have a c section.  All went well for her and one puppy survived.  By Wednesday, she no longer had colostrum and her milk wasn't coming in.  I started using replacement milk, but she was so young she just wasn't doing well.  A friend's cat gave birth on Thursday,  we decided to introduce pup to mama cat.  She took the pup as if it was one of her kittens.  Pup is doing really well.

Now comes the question.  How long will the pup continue to do well nursing on the pup.  Pup weighs only 4 1/8 oz.  if I need to supplement when should I be doing this.  If I do need to supplement I will need to take pup from cat because I live 20 miles away from we're pup is staying.  Friend is not able to supplement pup.  Give me all the suggestions you can.  Has anyone heard of the survival of a pup who is nursed by a cat?

That is a cute story and you do often hear of various species caring fir another species.
Can you leave the pup with the mama cat until old enough to be weaned?  If the cat is feeding and cleaning the pup, that may be the best option.

That sure sounds like a very low weight.  Do you know the birth weight and is it being weighed daily?

If you try this on your own, you will have to feed every 3hours or so around the clock, burp and stimulate the pup to potty.  Have to commit to that for a few weeks.  You could try the milk replacer again or canned goat's milk.

You can use a vegetable scale to monitor the weight daily.

If pup is doing well, I'd leave it with the cat and see how that goes.

Do keep us updated.

AAAWWW!!!  That is SO sweet!!!  I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you other than that I have seen mixed-species mothering do well.  I just had to chime in on this cute story! :-)  - Blu
