My dog goes through silly phases when she won't drink water for a few days! Then suddenly she's back to normal. I mentioned this to the vet and he had no idea why, or really what to do! He said as long as I DO get fluids down her she should be just fine.
I came up with a little trick. When I feed her when she's going through one of these 'phases' I always put gravy with the food. (Just unseasoned meat/chicken/fish stock, thickened slightly with a little cornflour.) It makes her dinner a bit mushy, but as she is fed twice a day I feel she is getting just enough fluids this way. Also if I give her a drink from my hand (long boring job!) she will drink ok that way. So for those few days it means more work for me until she decides to go back to normal again!
Some dogs who won't drink will eat ice-chips. You could try that.
You said your dog drinks once a day?? And because she is very small, she won't drink as much, obviously, as a larger dog would. I don't know for sure, but if she has a decent drink once a day that might be enough for her needs?
I tried floating a treat in a saucer of water! thinking she might drink her way through to the treat. That was hilarious! She tried every method she could to drink no water yet get to the treat. The water ended up all over the carpet. The treat got snaffled. She stayed dry! I'm not doing THAT again.
Some animals only like running water! They can be very picky. You could try the cat fountain or maybe try filtered water if your using tap, or tap water if your using filtered.
make that frozen treats not drinks.
hi. i make frozen drinks for in the summer & add no salt broth to the water. you need to change the water frequently though so it doesn't spoil. you can use the bottom of a water bottle (the ones we discard of by the thousands) and make your own frozen treats. mine is able to drink at least a cup of water with a treat. you just have to factor in the calories. & watch for bladder and UTI infections.
Mine and My Aunts Chihuahua's both not drink water much! They drink from our fingers.I did find they will use those cat fountains where the water flows down.I know they can cost alot but they do work! I hope this Helps
