Do I have to let her go

My 10 year old miniature schnauzer was diagnosed with Congested Heart Failure two years ago and has since been on medication.  A couple of weeks ago, i took her to the vet for her annual check-up.  The vet was surprised that she was still doing well, however increased her meds because her stomach was swollen with fluids.  Up until yesterday she was doing fine.  Last night, she started throwing up.  Today, she refuses to eat and is throwing up everything, even water.  She also has a hard time breathing.  Since this is a long weekend, I called my vet through emergency.  He told me to increase her medication eventhough she won't keep it in.  I'm not sure this is making her feel any better and she looks like she's in pain.  The vet told me not to give her anything for 24 hours, even water?  The vet also told me that her time was near and that she had lived longer than expected with this type of disease.  Is it really time to let her go?

I am also very sorry to hear she passed away. But it is true, she knew love, and that is one of the best things she could have had in her life. I was wishing and hoping she would be ok....
Rest in peace little dog.

Your Vet upped the Novo Semide because of the fluid in her stomach.....If you can get this medication in her, it should help....

Are you saying she was fine before the Vetmedin was started? I'd stop this med for a couple of days and see if she gets better.....

Depending on what the Heart problem is (I assume you know), I never saw that the Vetmedin did anything when I used it!

If she started getting worse after the Lasix was increased, and started peeing more, she may be dehydrated and that would certainly cause nausea and illness.....Have you tried any pedialyte? I would give it a shot....You can actually buy the popsicles and chop them up in a bowl.....They are flavored and she might like them.....

Her breathing will improve if you can get the Novo in her for art least a coulple of days...Once the fluid is controlled, you can cut back again to the dose she is use to....Then increase again if you see or hear the fluid building again....

Did they do bloodwork at her checkup? Are you sure the fluid retention is from just the Heart problem.....If she had bloodwork done, were her Liver & Kidney Values in the good range? I'm thinking this is all connected....Let me know.....

Until then, Hang in there...I know how hard it is!  I would base my decision to let her go, on if she can no longer breathe comfortably.....Just my opinion.....I'll be thinking about you both.......Karla

She is taking
2 X 1/2 Enacard,
2 X 1.5 Novo Semide 20mg and
1X 1 Vetmedin 1.25 mg

The only new medication is the Vetmedin.  Yesterday, my vet told me to increase the Novo Semide to 2X 2 per day.

A few weeks ago, the vet did blood work to see if she could take the Vetmedin.  At that time, the results were normal.  Now, i am worried there is nothing I can do to make her well again.  She won't eat, she can't drink, she is not responding to me, the other dogs and her toys.

It may be, but first....

What medications is she on?
If Theophylline (brand names "Theo-Dur"...."Theolair"...."Uniphyl"...) which is often given to ease some of the symptoms of CHF, this can have some side effects, especially with an increased dose. The medication has certain side effects such as irritation in the stomach, nervous system excitement etc. Other side effects that are likely to occur are vomiting, diarrhea, increased palpitation, a rise in body temperature, increased heart rate, skin rashes etc.

If Frusemide (water tablets) they are used to remove excess fluid which builds up in the abdomen, or can obstruct breathing. Frusemide doesn't usually give obvious side effects (unless the dosage is overdone, in which case dehydration can occur) But dogs on this should have their potassium level and kidney function checked regularly. Does the vet think there is also some kidney damage?

If Atenolol is being used an "upped" dose could result in more side effects, including nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, sudden weight gain.

This is all just a thought. Can you have a word with the vet -to ask if possibly the medication she is on could be causing these drastic side effects?

The advice you were given to withhold ALL food and water, may be to stop the cycle of vomiting, or possible because Pancreas inflammation may be suspected.
