Shepherd Diagnosed w/ Cauda Equina

My 5 year old shepherd/lab mix was just diagnosed w/ Cauda Equina Syndrome by a veterinary surgical group. An MRI & surgery, ballpark $6000, have been recommended. Has anyone had experience with this? Is surgery the only answer? Her condition is somewhat mild at this time, but I'm alarmed b/c the condition is usually described as progressive & debilitating.

Did they diagnosed what was causing her condition?

Infection?
Inflammatory?
Trauma?
Tumor?

If it is coming from a inflammatory condition, they can treat it with proper meds.  Same with infection.   She would need surgery for trauma and tumor.   But they can still treat her with meds if it's mild.
