Well, you are dealing with a puppy, for one. Takes time and patience. Very hard here to go into lengthy explanations on training. You might want to look up some training techniques on the Internet.
Best to start out with basic obedience commands like Sit, Stay, Down and reward. Work on one at a time, short sessions a few times a day. You can use a long. Light weight cord attached to the collar. When you give the command Come! Pull the pup to you. Have it sit and reward.
Your best bet is to get into a Basic Obedience class at 6 months.
Puppies take time, patience and structure.
sorry I bothered you, it was my breeder who suggested starting her on naming her toys. I did not ask for information on training and I think the 6 books and videos I have will do just fine. I will just back out of this forum
Sorry if you took offense to that and I don't know why????
Did your breeder give you and advice?
Herding breeds are very smart. Maybe try just a single toy and reward until she identifies the word with the toy and reward. Like a ball. Try adding a second toy but still ask her to get the ball, when correct, reward.
I had Shelties for years, very similar. They respond well when you are upbeat and love the praise.
Sarah, Actually, you did ask for suggestions on training which Margot responded very well to. I see nothing offensive in her post! I too, would have suggested a puppy training class for your girl!
You mentioned nothing (In your question) about Videos & books you already have....Or what has worked or not worked.....So, what was your question?
Maybe your breeder will give you some ideas since he/she suggested it in the first place....Karla
