Wagon Train Chicken Jerky treats Poison!!

Over 1000 dogs are sick and dieing from a major poisoning from chicken Jerky treats made in China. Go to MSN news or NBC news to read about it. do not give these treats if you have any please! I would not give any brand of Chicken Jerky right now just to be safe, and please tell everyone you know who has an animal that this is happening right now Sept 15, 2012

Hi. I have been following the jerky scare since it first came to light - and have researched what the implications are for us in the UK. I think you are misleading people by the quote you have put into your message. I have read the full report, several times, along with many other reports from the FDA. In brief, what they have said is that despite 1200 tests being conducted and ongoing investigations still being pursued, they have yet to identify what it is about the Chinese imported jerky treats that have been directly linked to nearly all of 3,000 dogs becoming ill (of which 580 have died). I think the point is that there is a bad history with Chinese imported dog foods and treats, as with the melamine contamination outbreak of 2007, and from what I can gather, the only link between these 3,000 dogs becoming ill with some of them dying, is they almost all have been given Chinese jerky. It would therefore be virtually impossible for Chinese jerky not to be implicated in dogs becoming ill and some dying. Tony

Hi - how is your dog doing doing? I hope ok. I had a dog that passed away last year at 4 years old out of no where. The vet said maybe it was unknown heart condition. But wasn't sure. Now I am thinking I use to give my dogs these treatts everyday and am now wondering if it had something to do with it. She was fine and then gone within an hour. I was curious of what type of symptoms your dog had.. Please keep me posted, Thanks, Carmella

This is a recurring theme and posts I keep seeing.  I have no doubt that your pets have become sick and do not infer in any way that I an a vet expert.  BUT I can do my own research and so should you!  Please see the FDA report you are all referring to before you all jump on the "Chicken Jerky is bad" bandwagon.  Just for the record, I do not work for a company that produces any pet food products nor am I Chinese (not that that should matter ...), I just have two healthy Alaskan Malamutes.

The FDA's latest posted report is here: FDA Investigates Animal Illnesses Linked to Jerky Pet Treats, September 14, 2012. (http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/SafetyHealth/ProductSafetyInformation/ucm319463.htm).
Quote: Since 2007, the FDA has been actively investigating the cause of illnesses reported in pets which may be associated with the consumption of jerky pet treat products. .... To date, none of the testing results have revealed an association between a causative agent and the reported illnesses. Unquote. READ THE WHOLE REPORT

So, if you don't want to feed your pet jerky, that's probably a good idea but the sky is not falling and this stuff IS NOT poison, just a treat.  Use it as such and stop trying to scare everyone.

And to the VET who posted in this thread - you of all people should really read the whole report before you speak.  Caution is appropriate but panic is not!

If you love your dog pass the word of mouth do not feed your love one this tasty treat any dog will love to death . Even top vets will be confused with the illness . Did my pet die?  Yes. 6 months old. My 3 doctors would get together and decide he needed a steroid shot , antibiotics and 2 pills of Prednisone a very powerful drug. Boom Boom favorite treat the dried chicken made in  China. Feeding my pet before leaving, giving him plenty of the so called treats upon returning I was surprised that more then half was uneaten. I soon noticed my puppy could not play with his toys. Taking the puppy to the vet he was not ill but needed his rabies shot. I told the vet he started drooling lately. And he won't let me look into his mouth. The doctor tried and made the comment joking he has lockjaw. My dog is healthy and continues to gain weight. I would return and this time he would be left for observation and given the shot. Within one hour returning home . I would comment his head is shrinking and sunken in. I would call the vet and their reply was normal for the medicine to cause atrophy. The did not listen the medicine was too powerful. It would shrink his head , eyes, and I believe his brain. He would go from healthy to sleeping all day. I would over the week return for more visits. The last visit my puppy now could only move 2 feet before falling down unable to move. The doctors  would now listen for my puppy it was too late.

Unfortunately my dog has renal failure due to those treats :(  Am praying hard that she will be ok - she is a fighter.  But, this is so appalling that they are allowed to sell something, I am sure knowing good and well, that can be poison to an animal.  I will definitely be on the band wagon against these treats or should I say tricks!!

it is such a shame that these stores are not forced to pull the Jerky Treats off their shelves!  I found shelves full at our local supermarket yesterday.  I reported them to the manager but until the FDA makes a ruling many animals will die and the shelves will remain full.  So sad!

My Vet said that San Francisco is a big distributor of Chinese products and to stay clear of dog foods and treats that say San Francisco.  Also to add, he also told us that many supermarket chains that have their own name on the products (such as Publix) who also use ingredients from China.  I play it safe.  I use Science Diet, Iams, Purina Products and for treats we usually buy Benefal, Rachel Ray, Iams dog biscuits, and Purina Products all manufactured in the U.S. (but not in San Francisco).  We had first made the mistake and bought those Country Kitchen products (it looked like it was natural and safe) but we found out, made in China.  We even look at our dog toys now to make sure it is not from China.

We also stay clear of any products containing beef - because our dog seems to have a beef allergy.  We buy all foods that are chicken instead and that has helped a lot!

Why San Francisco?  My husband feeds those big milkbone biscuits to our big dogs.  He said it doesn't say where they are made.  I said, yes, they have to say so I checked the box, only said distributed from San Francisco...so he called the 888- number.  The recording actually said "due to the high volume of calls asking where our product is made, we can say our products "ARE MADE " in the US...so they said it but a lot of people must be skeptical if they're getting that many calls!

I had read this Sat. after it was posted.  We went to Target in the afternoon and guess what....the shelves were full of this stuff.  I grabbed one (duck) and took it to customer service.  The girl said if there's an alert they are supposed to get it immediately.  They hadn't so I asked her if she could give it to her manager to research it.  She said she would.  When I go to town this week I will go by Target to see if they have followed through!

This is horrible and scary, isn't it?
Best to make home-made jerky treats, and liver treats. Nice wholesome ingredients.

Very good question, now that this is happening and has been happening, now that I have researched farer, I want to make it clear that it was not something that just happened yesterday this has been going on for quite a while. I have a lot of questions about the FDA and responsiblity for imports and about getting word out to stores so they can pull the bad products. But as I look for answers I am left with more questions. I would say for now do not trust anything edible from China for they have had bad food as well as treats for dogs. I guess home-made is the way to go, if you don't have time for that then at least make sure the treats and food are made here in the states.Very sad.:(

Question, I'll have to ask my friend that is a Vet also.......
When there are recalls like this, do the Vets somehow get notified other than by media news like the rest of us?

Thank you for the update.  I haven't checked the site.  These from China also?
Almost makes you afraid to feed any treats anymore.
Where the heck is Quality Control?
What else has been recalled from China, wall board, lead in toys and paint and how did lead get in Red Vines?  :-(

The FDA Alert for Chicken Jerkies has been extended to include sweet potatoe and duck jerkies as well. So far over 1300 dogs have been sickened by the jerky treats

My vet said to NOT buy any dog products that are produced from either from China or San Francisco.   Your best bet is to make sure the product is from the U.S.  When we shop now, we check all labels before buying.

Thanjs.  There is a longer list.  I'll try to find it.  I stopped feeding the Costco ones a long time ago but don't think they carry them now
