dog lump

I have an 11 month old german shepherd and I noticed 2 days ago that he has a lump as big as a golf ball if not bigger on the right side of his anal gland. I'm thinking that it might be the right anal gland but I'm not sure. It doesn't hurt him when you mess with it but when you give it a good squeeze he starts to yelp. I'm a cva, but I've never had this problem with my dogs before. I know how to do anal gland (my beagle needs her done twice a month). Does anybody have any suggestions?

Reesie, No, it is not drained like a normal gland.......They will drain with a needle & culture the fluid for infection......Oral antibiotics are always given as these are normally caused by an infection....Much like a Human Boil! And yes, they are extremely painful!!!!   Let us know how it turns out......Karla

I would take her to the vet to have this done since it is so big and just in case it could be something else going on.

can it be drained like a normal anal gland or do they have to use a syringe?

Welcome to the forum.......It sounds like an Impacted Anal Gland......If so, it can rupture quickly.......What happens is the tissue literally rips open & it becomes an open wound.....In the Anal area, an open wound is hard to keep clean, obviously & can lead to all kinds of other complications......

You need to see your Vet ASAP to have it drained before it ruptures.......Oral Antibiotics are given for infection......Let us know how he is......Good luck, Karla
