worried about my Old english sheepdog's whining/grunting

Hi, I have a 12 year old english sheep dog who's acting like she is in pain but I don't know for sure. I know she's getting old and her years if not months are numberd..but I'd liek to make the last ones happier for her. First thing is she can't get up on her own very easily at all. Most times she whines and barks until we lift her back hips and help her up. When she's lying on the rug,.. she's incontinent of urine also when she's sleeping ( next to our bed).
Well the last month or so she has begun this thing where she grunts and whines all night like she can't comfortable. She has a big soft bed to sleep on.She can't climb the stairs up or down with our help ..we have tried getting her to sleep on the 1st floor but she yelps all night until we bring her up. She has also fallen down the stairs several times within the past few weeks..I feel so bad for her.
I am wondering if anyone has had any similar problems with there dogs.. I am scared for her. Thanks!

Hi Summer,
Don't be scared as this can be easily fixed.....I'm surprised that you've waited this long without seeking treatment! This is very common in older pets & it seems the Winter makes it worse.....As with Humans, dogs get aches & pains....What your describing sounds like Arthritis.

Please get this girl to a Vet so he/she can prescribe prescription Anti-inflammatories! She needs some relief as she sounds as if she is very uncomfortable....Your Dr. will work with you on what will relieve your dog's pain, best. There are many pain control medications that work great! You Vet needs to determine whats best for your dog...

Dogs can live comfortably for years with medication...Please, don't wait!   It sounds as if everyone could use a good nights sleep.   ;)     Karla

Your dog needs to be seen by a vet, he will give her Rymadyl or some type of pain meds for arthritis, which should help a lot.  I would block the stairs so she can't try to get up unless your there, and carry her up at night.  They are a big problem.  As far as the peeing in her sleep, the vet can check her for an UTI or give her hormone replacement drugs, possibly. Good Luck.
