worried about my baby

My dog was spayed on Saturday, and she is acting odd. When I brough her home she was sleeping a lot , I ran out for a few min.and when I came home she got up and greeted me normally. But yesterday(Monday) she doesn't move from her bed, i tried to take her out to pee. But she takes a few steps and stops and frantically licks herself, takes a few steps and licks herself...over and over and then wont pee. She eventually pees on the floor...She is eating well and drinking little and still wants a tummy rub wich is now a chest rub. I haven't slept in 3 nights, well maybe a little with my head on her bed...I am so worried, Should I Be?

Oh I am so glad she is ok. I was worried too!

It is quite remiss of your vet to not give any pain meds! Dogs are not robots, they are flesh and blood! And obviously will feel some level of pain (from slight to intense, depending on individual susceptibility) after major surgery!

This actually has made me quite mad.

But..I am happy that she is better now, and that you can now sleep. Of course we worry about them. A dog is a family member.

We are all very glad to hear that your little one is doing better. Doctors give us pain medication when we have surgery they should do the same for your dog. Her pain should subside soon.

We all love our animals because they love us uncondionally. They are always there for us so we must be there for them. For some reason God decided to give us such a short time with them. Maybe that is because there are so many that need a good home and to be cared for that are abused. (That discusion is for another time)

Good Luck and stay around the forum. There is always something to talk about when it comes to our lives with our dogs. The more the merrier.

Post a picture of your dog if you can.

Got some sleep last night, vet gave her a pain shot and within an hour she was a little bit better. This morning I was so happy to be greeted with kisses, and she finally went outside to do her business...I was quite upset the vet didnt send some pain meds home with her in the first place. I asked him and he said the shot he gave her would last 24 hours and would be enough..apparently not....So I have pain meds for her for 2 more days, so we will see how it goes. Isn't it amazing how much we love our animals.....

I hope that it is just a pain issue and it can be resolved with medication. Let us know what the Vet tells you. At least he is coming to your house to check the dog. Something he should have done when you called the first time.

Please keep us updated. I hope she is ok.

Well things have really gone bad in the last hour, my elderly mother who lives with us. Calls me so upset that my dog won't move or open her eyes...as I start thinking the worst...She is alive.....She ate and drank and peed and pooped this morning, how fast things change. My heart is breaking....I called the vet again he said she is just tired, but he is on his way to my house anyways.......

A shot for pain or even a pain patch was going to be my suggestion.  People used to [ignorantly] think, and I am including vets in this group, that animals did not feel pain in the same way that people do.  Nothing could be less true.  Animals feel every bit of the pain that we do, they just show it differently, because their instinct tells them that to appear to be injured or in pain makes them prey for other animals that are looking for a meal, since weak or sick animals are easier to catch.

Most vets now offer the option of having the pet get a pain shot or a pain patch post-surgically, and even though they charge extra for it, it is well worth it to know that the pain of the surgery is being mitigated.  Once she has the pain meds on board I'm sure you will see a big difference in her demeanor.  Please let us know how things go.

I have probably called my vet 10 times since saturday, I am sure I am driving him nuts. But I love my dog so very much I haven't slept in 3 days... I think the reason I am so upset about all this is when I initially went to get her on Saturday.....she went back to get her and called me from the back and asked me to help her, I walk back and her kennel had blood all over it.....So she had to stay overnight because she was having trouble clotting..But I called 4 vets today and they all say she is still having pain, so I am taking her to the vet to get a pain shot...

You should make a call just to let the Vet know what your concerns are but I wouldn't worry too much. She is most likely experiencing some discomfort from the procedure.

I really don't think you have much to worry about, but it is good to see that your on top of it. Give a call over to the Vet as peekawho suggested and let them know what is happening and maybe they will give her a look to see if there are complications but the licking is most likely do to discomfort.

Let us know how you make out and I hope everything goes well.

It drives me crazy when some come on here and tell us about things that are happening with their dogs and then never let us know how the dog is doing after we give advice. All of us here really care about you and your dogs and it is good to know that everything turned out okay or that your dog is improving after being ill.

You should call her vet, the one who did the surgery, right away to tell him/her what's goiing on.  They may want to see her in the office.
