Can solar retinopathy cause death?

Sorry for the highly unusual question, my grandson (16 years old) recently had a episode of staring at the sun and it hasn't healed for some time and is a permanent blind area in central spot. I just want to know if there's a cause for concern with life expectancy and or death - or is this purely just a eye spot that will be there forever; I'm not to good with the internet and just want him to be okay and not at risk as he's so young and needs a full life... thank you.

sorry, I forgot to mention why I thought it could cause death. is solar retinopathy the cause of eye/choroid melanoma or a risk factor that makes them appear? If they were to appear would it be soon after or years later?

That is very unfortunate that happened. Solar maculopathy is not associated with early death or melanoma formation. HOWEVER, in young people that do this there is a very high incidence of drug use and they stare at the sun when spaced out on psychodelic drugs. Be sure that is not a problem.
