Hello. I am a 23 year old female. On a road trip during the summer of 2008, my left eye suddenly developed a sharp pain when I moved it. My vision became so blurred I had to pull over on the highway and switch drivers to finish off the trip. This particular episode lasted about 4-5 days. I have since had more episodes, they are unpredictable and last for a few horrible days. They are starting to become more and more frequent and have yet to find a pattern of what causes this problem to "flare up". I am very tired when they occur and I cannot even get my eyes to focus on a book.
I have been to my family physician, nothing was found. Went to an optometrist, found a decreased field of vision but optic nerve in tact and vision fairly normal. Went to a neurologist, had an MRI/MRA which came back normal, and had an EMG done to test for myasthenia gravis--results were negative.
When this problem occurs, my eyes visibly move on their own (float inward and outward as they please), looking down or to the upper right corner of my field of vision seem to make it worse, and looking directly upwards tends to temporarily relieve the symptoms. However, during the most recent episode, looking down made the symptoms a little better and looking up made them worse. My right eyelid also droops at random--most of the time during an episode, but sometimes on its own when no symptoms are going on.
Being a student, and with limited income, this problem is not only very frustrating and a road block for studying but I've also become fed up paying all of these medical bills with no results. Any suggestions as to what my next move should be?
