Currently, there is nothing that can effectively prevent PVR, nor is there much to arrest its growth once begun. There have been some trials in the past but none have yielded successful outcomes. Eventually the proliferation should cease or atleast stablize on its own, however the when and why is really not known. Some doctors may prescribe systemic oral corticosteroids to help combat inflammation and slow down PVR.
Also, unfortunately the visual outcome for many w/PVR is not all that great. If you have another eye be grateful and protect it!!!!! If this is your only eye you just have to hope for the best and be thankful for every sight-filled day, this is what I'm doing.
Best of luck.
Do read some of the posts from the many articulate people that have posted here about their prolonged and difficult recoveries from vitreo-retinal surgery. If nothing else it will let you know you are not alone. Especially helpful are the postings of Berrywoo

I am not a retina surgeon and can not tell you about new treatments for proliferative vitreo-retinopathy. Your surgeon would be the best source of information and/or you can get a second opinion from another retina Eye MD ophthalmologist.
