They are not equivalent and in some cases one is best and in some cases the other.

In answer to your question, I do not know. I have had both and will briefly tell you my experiences. My detached retina began 10/21/07. Vitrectomy surgery was done on 10/25/07. Few weeks later it detached. The doctor did 300 lasers. Few weeks later scar tissue made it become detached again. So the doctor but on the buckle. Few weeks later it detached again. I went to another Clinic and scar tissue was removed. Both doctors said my vision will be permanently blurred, will never be 20/20 even with glasses. The last surgery was on 03/13/08.   The worst pain was after the buckle surgery. It lasted about 3-4 weeks.
