New to the forum

Hey ladies, I am new to the forum.  I am an embryologist, and often come across people who don't really understand the embryo side of IVF, so I joined to help in whatever way I can...and of course pray for all you ladies hoping for a BFP!

Thank you for your response. They transferred both embryos on day 3. A day 5 transfer was never even mentionned, I'm not sure if they do them at my clinic. AH wasn't offered the first time, they said they only do it if there have been previous failed attempts. Does AH help the embryos develop at all, or is it just to aid implantation?
My RE said they would do day 1 ICSI, is there much difference between day 1 and day 2?
I really appreciate you taking the time to answer so many questions for all of us! It truly is appreciated.

Thanks so much for your post.  I think this is the biggest area of misconception we see at our office with our patients and I see it all over the board.

We do not see any difference in success rates between day 3 and day 5 transfers because the decision of what day to transfer is made with a lot of care and consideration -- let me tell you how its done where we work.

Usually, with all factors equal and considered we usually start a patient as a day 3 transfer, then if they have a failed cycle with a day 3 transfer we usually transfer them to day 5 for the next cycle.

Day 3 embryos are NOT bad -- but if we have a patient with only 2 embryos on day 3, we'd rather get them back into the uterus.  HOWEVER, if we have a patient with 6 embryos on day 3, there is no way to accurately decide what to transfer, so we will usualy wait until day 5 when a lot more development has happened so that we can pick 2 out of those 6.

I think there is a lot of hating on day 3 embryos when really we would not be transfering them if we thought they were hopeless and I do believe most clinics wouldn't do that, it is totally unethical.  So don't be discouraged and ask questions.  If they call you on day 3 and say COME TODAY ask why -- ask if your chances of success will change -- ask what the grades of the embryos are, or ask to see a picture.

If you ask, there is a good chance they will lay it all on the table for you.  But truly, our success with day 3s is NO different than with day5s!  Good luck gals!

Hey there!  So sorry to hear things have been SO tough for you.  Well, we evaluate egg maturity even if we do not do ICSI, we just do it after the insemination process, but it is a valuable tool to aid in normal fertilization.

I do agree that your fertilization rate is not bad but there may be more to the story that makes your RE think ICSI is a good idea.  The thing about assessing maturity with ICSI is even without immature eggs won't fertilize normally.

AZH is a good idea if doing a day 3 transfer, we always recommend it and most peope choose it.  On your last cycle, what day was your transfer of a 3 cell and 4 cell on?

That is the best resource I don't think people know they have and that is the ability to talk to the embryologist -- thats what we are here for.

I saw your message that you are moving to day 5 -- whats the story?

Hi!
Thank you again for your time on this forum you are a truly amazing human being!
Can you please explain to all of us the truth about day 3 vs day 5 transfer?
I just had a day 3 transfer were we transfered 3 grade 1 embryos.The same day we froze another 8 (6 grade 1; 2 grade 2).
I recently change clinic and I found a totally different approach. My previous RE was all about day 5.My new RE (who I trust 120%)considers only day 3 transfer.
Since I had always a fair amount of embryos (first IVF 5 blastocycst, second IVF5 blastocycst, thi last try 9 good looking day 3)it looks like the ratio might be not only in quantity..Just to give you a little more background both previous IVF got me pregnant but the fist one was a persistent ectopic pregnancy and the second one stopped to grow at 6 weeks due to chromosomal problems (after the D&C we found out that the embryo had 3 chromosom 6;all our ,me and DH genetic tests after that were normal).

It would be very helpful if you could shed some light on myths and truth about day 3 vs day5.
Thanks a lot,
Miky

Like Carisa  had a problem with egg quality. My first IVF attempt just failed, I'm 34, have ? high FSH and abnormal Clomid Challenge test. We had 13 eggs, 11 fertlized, but most developed abnormally. We ended up with only 2 embryos, a 3 and a 4 cell, both grade 4s. My RE wants to do ICSI and AH next time. Can ICSI really help us since there is no male factor issue? My RE said you can check the maturity  of the egg whilst doing it - how does this help?
