My 3 year old has acid reflux and keeps vomiting

My three year old has always been prone to vomiting. Since he was 12 months old, it's been an issue for us. When he was a baby he would cry so hard he would vomit. Every time he got a cold, he would cough until he vomited. Then he started throwing up when he was running around playing. He vomited when I brushed his teeth. He had a barium/upper GI exam last spring and he was diagnosed with Acid reflux. It looked like the vomiting was decreasing from multiple times a day to less than once a month. This month he has vomited five times. On Saturday, he had some chewy meat, gagged and threw up his entire meal. Tonight I put him to bed and after less than 2 hours of sleep he was awake as he had vomited on himself. I'm not sure if he did it in his sleep or not but that episode really worries me. He complains he's sick but when you child who vomits on a regular basis its hard to tell. We have an appointment next with a pediatric GI specialist. Is there anything I should ask about? I want to get the most out of his appointment.

He got sick in the car today. He hasn't done that since the summer. It's getting progressively worse again. I'm trying to stay positive but it's really tough!

I'm starting to wonder if he has a sensitive gag reflex. He vomited this morning because he was anxious over school. He cried, coughed and gagged. Then some of his breakfast came up. Then he's gagged twice while eating.

Thank you! He goes to the GI specialist next week. Today he's battling a bug of some sort! So last night's vomit might have nothing to do with his ongoing issue. Hard to tell when a kid who vomits on a regular basis is sick :/

Vomiting in infancy or children is generally common. If your 3 year old have been vomiting frequently in a day is a medical concern but if he vomits 5 times in a month does not really indicate a serious medical condition which cannot be managed.

Vomiting in children is dependent upon food intake, food intolerance, types of food that triggers vomiting and nausea, type of vomitus emitted, pattern of vomiting, frequency of episodes aggravating or diminishing.

In your case, let the child be evaluated for food (specific) intolerance and lactulose or fructose intolerance syndrome, food hygiene, food and bowel habits, acute abdomen, worm infestations, colitis, irritable bowel disease of infancy, pyloric abnormalities, and congenital abnormalities, which will be evaluated through physical examination and proper history taking by a Gastroenterologist or Attending physician.

It may be required to undergo few specific investigations like USG abdomen and Abdominal X-ray to completely evaluate and narrow down the factor that triggers such sensation.

The specific sign of Hiatus Hernia is coffee ground vomitus (coagulated blood is brown) and mostly a problem that is seen people with smoking, vigorous induces vomiting through straining or gag reflex, hard sneezing, position of defecation, being the most important etiological factors. It may be seen in children but the type of vomitus should be coffee colored or blood tinged. It can also happen due to incompetence of Lower esophageal sphincter.

If the barium meal study reveals GERD,it is mostly related to food habits and timing of food intake, types of food which finally leads to Zollinger Ellison syndrome, which is quite manageable.

Talk to your Doctor about these issues and have a complete evaluation done. Please keep us updated.

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum,

This could be an allergy, hiatal hernia....a motility issue...

Were u told to try and elevate the head of his bed?

His gag reflux may be an issue....

I understand ur concerns....and tell all of them to the Dr....especially the vomiting at night in bed....

Best of luck and do keep us posted on what u find out and ur DS's progress with this.
