What to do?

I am 43, have osteopena, low ferritin, asthma and a large hiatal hernia.  I have heard that taking PPI's long term can interfere with calcium and iron absorption but I cannot live without PPI.  Do you think that I would benefit from having a Nissen Fundalplication?

My recovery was quick and very easy.  I had a great surgeon and also I had the surgery before there was a lot of damage done.  I made sure that I only ate what I was suppose to and ate only 1/2 cup at a time about every 2 to 3 hours.  The one time I ate more, I had the shoulder pain and went for a long walk and this helped.  I was on soft food when I went home from the hospital and ate still only 1/2 cup.  I ate blended foods.  No tomato, carbinated drink or any acid food.  Then when I went back to the doctor a week later he put me on regular food, except salad or steak for awhile and no carbinated drinks for a few months.  I had my surgery on a Thursday and was at work on Monday.  The doctor told me to chew chew chew and I did when I started reg. food.  So my surgery and recovery went really well.

How was your Nissen surgery?  I have heard that it is a hard surgery to recover from.

Yes, if it is warranted you would benefit.  The Gastro dr would order many tests before a surgeon would do the surgery.  I have osteoprosis and it was steadly getting worse.  I was on meds but still getting worse.  I had the Nissen, but not because of the osteo but because I was coughing so hard my blood pressure went through the roof, was not on BP meds before - now am.  I now take once a month Boniva and feel so much better.  The Nissen is still working great - operation 10/2008.
