Spleen or something else?

Hi there,

For a few weeks I have been having this gnawing pain under by left rib.  Thinking about it, about a week before this pain started I did some heavy lifting for an extensive period of time which I am ordinarily not accustomed to.(So a week later the pain starts basically)  Pressing on the lower part of the rib hurts, deep breaths are uncomfortable, (but manageable).  Tying my shoe is a chore; abrupt twisting to the right is no fun & forget about doing any sit-ups.  No other symptoms to speak of.  Of course the hypochondriac in me fears spleen issues, but is it possible it could be a pulled muscle, broken rib perhaps?  There was no trauma.  I am a 40-year old male

We are all hypochondriacs here, it's healthy to a certain extent since we are teaching ourselves about illnesses, right? So you shouldn't worry. I think your right, heavy lifting for an extensive period which your not accustomed to does that. But what sort of heavy lifting are we talking about? Is there any bruising? Did the pain occur the same day as the heavy lifting, or the next day? or a week later?

You either must have pulled a muscle, OR if the pain is severe, you may have tore a muscle. Whatever you do don't look at anything heavier than a pencil. Relax. If the pain is unbearable, you ought to get it checked out... you may need to get some prescription painkillers.

I heard of swollen spleens rupturing from heavy lifting but not normal ones.

Probably just a pulled muscle - but an x-ray might allay your fears of a fractured rib.  Incidentally, there isn't anything they do for a cracked rib.  (been there).  Just take NSAIDs and try to relax the area for a while.  Hot and cold compresses might help with the muscle pain.
