When I drink anything it can be heard as a loud gulp, my friends have noticed it

Hello my throat is not sore but I have been made aware by friends that when I drink its a loud glug or gulp, its really loud at times, but I am not taking big amounts of fluid, only drinking normally. I have asked friends to sip and I do a sip and it sounds like a big load going down me in a noisy way, but its not, I am doing the same as them but is so noisy when I drink. Can someone explain why as I find it embarrasing now, as I am aware that I am different to others when I drink.
Is there any medical conditions that would cause this?
I am a female
Age 56

Thank you
Michele

Hello~My husband has this issue, I can hear him gulping his coffee all the time, even if he is not truly gulping. I don't think it is serious, if it is, then he would have shown other issues by now. I think it is just the way a person swallows.

If you are super worried, then contact your doctor, otherwise, I wouldn't worry, maybe try drinking slower or using a straw as Specialmom suggested.

Hm.  Well, I have a son who I swear has this issue.  I've tried to work with him on how he is drinking believe it or not.  But he does tend to actually gulp. I also think we can hyper focus on things.  And if we stop doing that, it goes away.  I don't think there is any type of condition that is going to cause sound upon drinking. It may be the speed with which you are drinking and you can try taking smaller sips more slowly. You can also try a straw.  good luck

Have you looked up dysphagia? Injuries to the throat can cause problems with swallowing, or strokes, GERD, cancer, conditions that cause stiffness of the muscles in the throat, and other medical conditions also.

If this is new (in other words, if nobody has ever told you that you swallow audibly until lately) and if there is nothing obvious that you can think of that might have injured your throat or otherwise triggered the change your swallows being noisy, it seems like a good idea to see an ear, nose and throat doctor. You would not want to ignore some of the more serious conditions that can cause problems with swallowing.

And in my opinion, even if it is something as common as GERD (which is obviously not life-threatening) it's well worth taking seriously and treating.
