I have had 7 abdominal surgeries. Gastric bypass 2012, lap chole 2013, exploratory lap 2014, panniculectomy 2015, ventral hernia repair 2015, mesh removal from hernia repair with exp lap 2016, and recently open epigastric incisional hernia repair 2/21/2017.
I am one month post op from recent surgery. Immediately upon opening my eyes from surgery I knew something was different. I had extreme pain, more pain then I've had with any surgery I've had. Within 1 week my incision opened both at the top and bottom of the incision. It drained large amounts of drainage that went from seroussang to seeopurelent drainage on 4 occasions. At this time, the upper part of my incision is open to a depth of 5cm. I have been packing it for two weeks with no improvement. I almost completed augmentin but developed a rash and was switched to Bactrim DS. I continue to have severe pain and see no signs of improvement. I am actively draining yellow to green pus that has a very slight odor which continues to increase. I have only had a couple of low grade temps, I'm fatigued, and generally feel unwell.
I am an RN and to me these are all signs that the mesh is preventing my incision from healing. I had complications from the mesh placed during my first hernia repair as well. I was supposed to return to work on march 17th and can not. I would like the incision to be opened, cleaned out, and mesh removed. Because I am an RN the PA is treating me for MRSA. They have not cultured the wound.
At this time, would it be a good idea to have the mesh removed? Should something else be done?
Thank you,
Jamie
