yeah it sounded a little  fishy to me  at first too, but  I  actually spoke to him on the phone yesterday and he said that she tested positive two years ago and he left her then, but they have nine  (9) kids together and she always comes over to see them and he goes through her stuff and he found the number, and after speaking to him he didnt sound very upset but sounded serious. So this is a really messed up situation and I wish i had short term answers.. ill be leaving on another vacation at my six week point  can i get tested at the five week point? from what i have read that will be about 75% correct?

Her husband called you out of the blue?  Sounds kind of "hokey" to me!  I think someone is messin' with you!

PLUS...if it really IS the husband...he could be VERRRRY mad....and decide he will screw with you!

I wouldn't believe anything at this point!!!

Hi there,

Testing 3rd week is too early.....try to hang in there...6 weeks would be a indicator of your status, in term of HIV.

and confirm that the risk is around 1/2000 to 1/1000 for an infected woman to give it to an uninfected man through vaginal intercourse??

thanks, i must have read wrong in an article talking about this, i was just worried that her having possible STI's other than HIV would raise the infection rate from her to me. I am going to get tested at the three month mark but also at the three week mark and then again at the six week mark, hell I may even get tested every day just to make sure

Hi there,

If it's protected, than it's protected.....regardless of you have STIs or not...

Cheers!

Hi there,

Unprotected intercourse will put you at risk of being infected with STIs including HIV.  You can go for a HIV test at the 6th weeks ( which is a very good indication of your 3rd month test result) and repeat at the 3rd month for a conclusive result.

The risk of HIV transmission through unprotected sex increases when you have the presence of STIs (sores, broken skin, etc). Not the other way round.  Beacause the risk of HIV transmission increases if there is contact with body fluids such as semen, vaginal fluids and blood, with the presence of sores and broken skin.

Thanks for your answer :) I keep gaining new insight from the likes of you & Teak practically everyday on here. You guys are really doing a commendable thing by providing such a service to everyone (especially the "worried wells" like us lol)

Also, I wanted to clarify something though, perhaps my wording was out earlier. Let's say I have protected sex with an escort, and unbeknown st to me I have an untreated STD whilst this episode. In context to HIV transmission, me having used a condom would've protected me regardless of an untreated STD or not against HIV? Correct?

Basically, I just wanted to know if this statistic of an individual being 3 fold more likely susceptible to HIV contraction applies to protected sex?

I can understand your fears bamagun, but as nursegirl has said; perhaps it's a good idea if you could somehow get tested together to ascertain an accurate idea of her status.

"Hearing rumors" that someone is HIV positive isn't the most credible source of information, especially in these sort of matters. I'd really like to see what Teak has to say about this.

that is where things get complicated, i meet her walking home from a bar and someone three days ago called claiming to be her husband and told me that she tested positive two years ago, which would lead me to believe that her viral load might be low?? I am hoping so.. as far as when it occured that was eleven days ago and I am going to get tested at the three week mark and then again  at the three month mark?

First, you're not an "idiot"...we all have made poor choices.  There is NO point dwelling on it...what's done is done.  Important thing now is to move forward and get tested.  For a "conclusive" result, you'll need to test at 12 weeks post exposure.  How long ago did this happen?

Second....if you are "hearing" that she is HIV+, please don't get yourself upset just yet..you'd be amazed at how rumors start, and get carried away.  Unless SHE told you herself, I wouldn't count on what you're "hearing" as being set in stone.

Lastly.....worst case scenario....if she IS indeed POS...again....it doesn't mean you automatically contracted it.  Sure, some things will increase and decrease your risks...such as what her viral load was at the time of the intercourse, etc....but at that point....it is silly to drive yourself batty with all of the "good" and "bad" aspects....testing is your only answer.

Again...can you contact her?  That would certainly be a start!

it was a one night thing  on vacation (yes i know im an idiot) and hear that she has been HIV positive for two years now.. i am just looking at the worst case senario for my odds and was just wondering if she had an untreated std if that would increase the chance that she could give me HIV

Oh...and just an FYI....condoms are not as effective with EVERY STD out there....depends on the disease and the exposure.  They are VERY effective for HIV and Hepatitis...but for some of the others....less of an "exposure" is needed to transmit.  But...that is for another forum.  ;0)

bamagun...Ok, now are you "assuming" she is HIV+, or do you have some sort of proof that she is?  There is a big difference.

Ok, the fact that you had condom protected sex fgor SOME of the time is a good thing, but as you know....you still put yourself at risk.

If she IS indeed HIV POS, it is NOT a guarantee you will contract it...know that first of all.

The STD increased risk refers the one who is exposed....as far as talking about increased risks.

Can you ask this girl to be tested along with you?  If so...that may give you some answers more quickly.  How long ago did this happen?

it is my understanding that she is HIV positive, and it was vaginal, of which the first ten minutes with a condom and the next nine or ten minutes without (I was drunk and that was the worst decision I have ever made taking that thing off) but back to the question, i have read that an STD could possibly raise the chance of infection of HIV, but is the risk associated with giving or recieving HIV?  Does that clear the question up?

"If you had an untreated STI it is said that it increases your chance 3 fold"

Teak, quick question. Let's say someone has an untreated STD, but they use a condom? Then the above doesn't apply, correct?

Was this "risk" unprotected vaginal or anal sex?  If not, you are worrying over virtually nothing.

If it was unprotected intercourse...the only way HER having STD's raises the risk for HIV is obvious....in that she might have had risks in the past that exposed her to that.

I do not believe the presence of other STD's concurrent with HIV increases the actual transmission risk for HIV.  Teak?  That is an interesting question...I would only assume due to lifestyle and possible risky behavior?  Any physical risk?

Enlighten me.....

I just read your reply again mr teak and I was asking if "she" had an STI, which i dont know, would that increase the risk? I myself am clean to the best of my knowledge and have zero open sores or cuts and am circumsized

so that being said Mr. Teak the risk would go from 0.0003 to 0.0009? or somewhere about there?  I know most of this has been discussed and I could search and find it, but frankly I am freaking out over here and just need someone to tell me that Im probably going to be ok...

thanks
